Herring Cover Cider

My random apple recipe:

The apples were all roadside apple and crab apple trees around HRM (mostly Herring Cove). I figured I would get an overly tart cider that was quite bitter, but honestly it turned out great. Clear and pale yellow, slight sweet taste with a lot of tart apple taste in there. Some of the apples were blemished but I pressed em anyways. Had a lot of rib bbq's drinking these and they got pretty good reviews from friends. I should have aged it longer...but I wanted to drink them! And I am sure a better yeast strain would have improved it but all in all I am pretty happy with how it turned out and I look forward to the next apple harvest.

16 L of fresh pressed apples
1 cup of honey
1.5 kg of white sugar
1 strong cup of tea
Tiny bit of molasses

Sadly I only had bakers yeast around

Sounds awesome; and a pretty simple recipie too! I might give this a try this year...the wife and I usually pick those same apples (we live in Herring Cove) and make jelly with them.

Heh, I assumed you meant Herring Cove Rd.

There are about a dozen apple trees along the Herring Cove Rd near Long Pond...I can't wait for Fall!

Sounds like a tasty cider.

Cool press. Thanks for posting a pic. This makes me think I might be able to build a press of my own. The design looks simple enough... Ish. :?

Any chance you could get a pic or two from some other angles? If not, no worries.

redoubt I definitely can post a bunch more pictures of the press.

On the weekend I will take a bunch and start a new thread about my press I suppose. I am not sure which forum to post it in (maybe DYI?)

to make one wouldn't be too hard, but you'd need a long thick threaded bar, and a gigantic screw to wind it through. I would also suggest a square barrel would be a lot easier to make.

That's great! Thanks so much! DIY sounds like a fine place to post it. I plan on DIYing it, anyway, so why not? :)

I have questions about the square barrel idea, but will save it for DIY... ;)
