Decided to try to make a clone version of Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA as I am a big fan of that beer.

The recipe is based on info from Sierra Nevada, numerous recipes on the internet and my untrained tastebuds.

O.G. ended up at 1.072, F.G 1.015, estimated IBU 74. ABV 7.4%

Grain bill for 5 gal batch
6 kg Pale malt (2 row)
0.5 kg Crystal malt 40L
0.20 kg Munich malt
0.10 kg Carafoam

Hops
30 g Magnum (Whole leaf) at 60 min
20 g Magnum (Whole leaf) at 30 min
40 g Citra (pellets) at 5 min
40 g Magnum (Whole leaf) at 5 min
20 g Citra (pellets) dry hopped for 7 days
20 g Crystal (pellets) dry hopped for 7 days
20 g Magnum (pellets) dry hopped for 7 days

Yeast
17 gr US-05

I've done some initial tasting and it tastes pretty similar to the original, just a bit "fresher". I just picked up a 6 pack down in Maine yesterday, so I can do side by side comparison tonight and tomorrow.

Yes, I love that one also. I had a 6 pack back in March.
Will probably give that recipe a go when the new hop season opens.

Did a side by side comparison last night.

Colour and aroma is pretty much spot on. Me and my wife could not tell them apart by aroma, and the colour is identical.

As for taste, bitterness and malt profile is very similar, but my version has more fresh hop flavour, especially from Citra, some of it is probably due to the filtration of the original, but I would still probably dial back on the 5 min Citra addition a bit next time I make it.

Cheers,
Jon
