Stout

OG: 1.064
FG: 1.014
IBU: 48
SRM: 37
ABV: 6.61%

Recipe was for 5 gallons.

Grains:
11.88 lb Viking Pale Ale (84.8%)
1 lb Home Toasted Flaked Oats (7.1%)
0.63 lb Chocolate Malt (4.5%)
0.5 lb Roasted Barley (3.6%)

Hops:
1.7 oz Magnum 11.7% (30 minutes)
0.5 oz Nugget 5% (flame out)

Water:
Well water with estimates for mineral content and some chalk, calcium chloride and baking soda added. Probably moderately hard without too many carbonates.

Yeast:
Mangrove Jack Voss Kveik, fermented under a heavy blanket.

Other comments:
I was aiming somewhere between an oatmeal stout and a foreign extra stout on this one. If I do it again, and I might, I'll probably add some crystal malt to it.

Man , this is a great stout. I tend to over complicate my stouts with all my must go left over grains. Surprisingly light and refreshing, seems dryer than 1.014. Nice roasty toasty with just a little chocolate. Perfect bitterness, Voss is a boss and works great here. Nice Job !
Kegged - Cold IPA, NEIPA, Fieldberry Wheat, Dark Abbey Ale, Apple Pear Cider, American Lager, American Stout, Belgian Wit

I like this stout a lot. Very smooth, not too bitter or roasty, hints of dark chocolate.

Very enjoyable stout with just enough roast and a bit of bite.

Thanks Andrew!

I sat with my GF and we blind tasted this to see if I could guess what it was and the ingredients in it. Very obvious that it’s Magnum for bittering. I thought it was a milk stout because of the fullness which I think was a cool combo from the Kviek and the specialty malts. I thought cascade in the whirlpool and I figured about 23 IBUs so I’m wrong lol.

This beer is great and if I brewed it at Serpent I would proudly serve it to my customers. The only real negative is that i don’t have more.

Thanks!

I don't think I have anything to add that others haven't already said, but it's a fine stout. Head and retention are top notch. You clearly got a fairly clean result from the Kveik yeast, which isn't always the case. Well done!

I don't have more to add other than I'm blown away that it was Kveik yeast, great beer!
