2018 Advent - December 10th - Nick Danger Porter
Nick Danger Porter
THE VITALS
OG 1.080
FG 1.014
8.6% ABV
MALTS
85% Marris Otter
6% Crystal 60
5% Chocolate Malt
3.5% Special B
.5% Black Paten
HOPS
Tettnang - FWH ~7IBUs
Magnum - 60mins ~35IBUs
Cascade - 10mins ~6IBUs
MASH
150F (overnight mash, with batch sparge in the morning)
60min boil
FERMENTATION
Wyeast 1450 - Dennys Fav50 (made a big starter)
20C for 21 days then kegged and force carbed.
NOTES
I really liked the last recipe I tried from Denny Conn so I took a stab at a Porter for the first time using his recipe. I don't know exactly what happened but my OG was way higher at 1.080 (was aiming for 1,072) so the beer turned out much bigger. I was worried it would be too boozy but I don't think that's the case. I've had one sample and it hits hard but tastes smooth. Not sure if this really falls into the category of a porter.
Hope y'all enjoy! Happy Holidays!
Any and all feedback is very welcome

Eh, it’s a porter even if it doesn’t fall in line with a specific subcategory. I’m looking forward to it.

Man oh man what a delicious beer.
Gettin some fruit on the nose, slight roast, bit of hops.
Taste is bitter and fruity up front with a nice crisp and full mouthfeel. Hops linger on the finish with the dark malts.
Good job, definitely will brew it some time.

Lots of chocolate/coffee roast and dark fruit in front, hop flavour comes through more in the finish. Really smooth beer, ust the right amount of sweetness. One of my favourites so far this year. Thanks for sharing
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

For some reason I thought this was a Brett beer, had left it in the cold until today to avoid a bomb, so I thought I was going crazy while drinking it as it was incredibly smooth and not funky at all. Glad to read this post and find out what's going on. It's a solid Porter for sure, sneaky as I couldn't tell it was a strong as it was until I read the recipe. Great job, and thanks for sharing!

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Just a great beer. I'm really enjoying the roast/caramel malt balance. I wouldn't have guessed its 8%. Thanks!

I liked this a lot. There's definitely a little alcoholic heat, but it's not to the detriment of the beer at all. Really nice roast character in the aroma that carries through to the palate. Some coffee, a little dark fruit, and as someone else mentioned, a really fitting level of sweetness. Bitterness is spot on. A really nice beer overall and one I'll definitely consider brewing myself. Thanks!

Simply a delicious Winter Porter. Hard to be better. Commercial quality. Enjoying it listening in the dark to an old Bruce Cockburn vinyl album.

Very delicious, greatly enjoyed. Superbly brewed. I will certainly take a closer look at this recipe. It was also a wonderful reward of success after a dishwasher install.
Cheers, thanks for sharing.

This was really great. It's got everything in just the right balance; roast, dried dark fruit flavors, hop bitterness. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback I'm glad it was well received and you enjoyed it!
The name comes from Denny Cons assistant brewer 'Nick Danger'. It just happened to be very fitting and nothing I would want to drink more than one of in a sitting. I get a major buzz from one glass.
Also, it did have a little farmyard funk in the recipe! I would never be able to brew if I didn't include one of my kids.

I’m just getting to this one now, and enjoying it a lot. It’s cocoa-y and bitter and burnt raisiny and not my first beer tonight.

Wow! This beer packs a flavourful punch. I didn't get a lot on the nose initially. I think my fridge is running too cold. I got a tonne of treacle toffee and coffee aromas retro-nasaly once it warmed up to body temp. The colour was like cask aged bourbon with a thick tan head. Amazing pop from the stopper! There was a big flavour of Christmas cake fruits, candied peel, sultanas and liquorice along with the roast and heat of irish coffee. Mouthfeel was decadent and warm.
Absolutely fabulous beer. Thank you!

Can’t say that a Porter is something I usually reach for. But this one’s amazing. Coffee / chocolate / licorice and definitely going down smooth. Trying to let it warm up a bit to see if I get anything else.
Great beer!
Thanks for the brew !!!
