I have so many butternut squash this year I don't know what to do with them.
Pumpkin seems to be a popular adjunct this time of year, but has anyone ever made/tasted a squash ale? Is it any good? Should I bother trying to make something with them?

Re: Squash
Somebody did it.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

I've made delicious "pumpkin" pie with butternut squash nobody (in my family anyway) can tell the difference. It would probably be the same in beer... i'd give it a shot, no point in wasting all that beautiful squash.

If you look at the ingredients of canned pumpkin pie mix, it's often squash... I know people who swear that squash makes the best pumpkin pies, anyways.erslar00 wrote:I've made delicious "pumpkin" pie with butternut squash nobody (in my family anyway) can tell the difference. I had jolly pumpkin's sour pumpkin beer on the weekend and it was great! Sounds like you've got a solid plan theregordonsbeachbrewer wrote:a Squash Sour Ale would be interesting...

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Squash
Butternuts and most winter quash keep really well, so you could just store them and enjoy them over the winter...unless you have more than your family could possibly eat. Just pack them loosely and stuff them in the basement or attic (provided it doesn't freeze) [reference: http://www.nwedible.com/2011/11/storing ... quash.html]. They make great pureed soups, though I enjoy them most baked with a little butter and brown sugar. I'm all for beer, don't get me wrong, but prefer my squash as food.HopGrower wrote:I have so many butternut squash this year I don't know what to do with them.
