Why? You've been competing for how long? How long has he been competing?

With every competition entered, your chances likely go up..you learn what you do good on and can enter those beers on a regular basis. You get solid recipes that you know win competitions and you brew those.

mr x wrote:All I was saying, and this is really to the credit of our own people, is that if the objective of club rankings is simply points, then I don't agree with that. I don't feel that overall points is an accurate representation of quality per entry, unless you have a hard limit of entries per club per competition (of which most clubs would meet the minimum number of entries to make results valid), or a way to scale results to achieve the same goal.
I've spent many years in amateur winemaking competition, and it operates very differently. Nobody sends wines across the country for club competition. You might have more than one local club that you'd submit to, but I don't know many people doing even that. Then, the club winners would submit to provincial competition, and provincial winners to the national competition (Amateur Winemaker's of Canada competition is in Nova Scotia, again, this year—I'll be judging, and I expect Jeff Pinhey will too).

Rob (Rubbertoe, other Rob) is right that a Brewer of the Year contest that is based on entries to any number of club competitions is biased towards clubs "out west" (where I think "west" is defined as west of Quebec city).

The simple answer is Jimmy, I have a lazy streak. I'm glad Rob pointed out it is a lot of work. Money wise, I recon I'll sped a couple of thousand on shipping and ingredients if I do all the competitions on the circuit. There will be lots of surplus beer as well (about 75% of what's brewed), all kinds of different beer. That's not bad for a hobby. I'm having fun with it any way. Before I started brewing I fear we probably spent quite a bit more at the liquor store in a year. Even if it came to 2,500 for a year of competitions, that's equivalent to three bottles of $15 wine per week for a year. Easily done if you entertain at all.

This is a good discussion, as usual for this site.

He's beatable but he has everything dialed in for competition. I think it'll take a few years of this to beat him 1:1.

I mean there's some styles I've either beat him in already or could beat him in any given comp but I think he has the styles he enters nailed down. I'm great at a few styles but it'll take a while to dial in others. It's the name of the game.

At the end of the day I'm happy to compete when I can and feel I've proved myself in competition. However I do have a competative side and want to continue but logistics get in the way.

Jared gives an honest account of how he does it here. It's a good read on brewing in general as well: http://winnipegbrewbombers.ca/about/art ... -the-year/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Updated results to include Lethbridge. They need to add Mark's 4 points to the Brewnoser's total. We should have 25.

Josh, I like the friendliness of the people going for this. Doesn't seem like a fight, more of an old boy network, supporting each other. I've been talking to the other competitors on social media. It's nice that the same great brewers spirit is everywhere you go. I'm not too concerned either way, just enjoying the ride.

Thanks Neil, you're way up there with wine awards ...way up ;)

Going back a few comments, but I'd be interested in hearing more about different ways of ranking participants. X, how would your formula work for 10+ beers across 12+ competitions?

I saw on the Master competition site that they have two awards: one for brewer with single highest scored beer, and one for most accumulated points.

I think ranking should be done by average score for round 1. If you have a 40 beer and someone else has a 39, and another 38. I think the highest scores should take 1st, 2nd and 3rd. If there are 2 that have a tie. Take the highest score out of the 3 judges sheets as the tie breaker.

As for best of show. No idea.

It would be nice if competition entries were limited to maybe half a dozen per brewer, but then part of the challenge is to be able to brew a large number of styles and brew them well enough to place. I'm beginning to discover many of these competitions have no entry limit, but instead specify only one per sub category. So a brewer who can brew many different styles (and has the time to do that) stands a better chance. It's a test of endurance as well as skill. Comparing it to a triathlon might make sense in some ways. No system will be perfect though. Just the basic judging is not perfect even.

Jared (#1 by miles) posted a pic of his 12 medals from the Olds Comp on twitter. I wonder how many entries it takes to get 12 medals? I need to step up my game. My 3 golds and a bronze pales in comparison.
