Lol. It will have a few unique ingredients. Might be good. But I'm assuming it's gonna be disgusting.

I think there should be a qualifier in the rules. Something like: Entries submitted must be sampled by brewer at time of submission.

I asked for clarification on styles and dates, and I was told to hold on for a bit. So I think we'll hear more in the next couple of days.

I do believe the base/starting point for the beer should be an American IPA, 5.5-7.5% ABV, 40-70 IBU.

Full Am IPA specs here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Iye ... sp=sharing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ROFL. I wouldn't want to intentionally waste beer. But the ingredients I'm going for are unique.

Mine's a mix of flavours from US, Australia, UK, Germany, Mediterranean, and tropics, with a glistening, sparklingly clear unique colour like no other and a pure white head. Acidic tannins will be present for added interest. Bitterness will be on the lower end. No dry hopping because clarity and appearance will be a strong feature. Heavy late additions however.

Sounds delicious Mark. That reminds me, proper carbonation and good head retention are always really important in this competition.

LOL yeah that seems to be Daniel's obsession... I forget what beer it was, but I had something at the brewery a few weeks back that was almost flat. I laughed a bit.

How does he like his IPA's? Should they be slightly overcarbed to be on the safe side??

I think that this is not a good idea for the Brew off Comp. :(
This idea for an IPA is way too broad of beer to properly judge, Jayme is right, there will be a lot of bad beer, over the top hoppy beers and making it really hard to judge; let alone no real guidelines to follow.
Why can't they just pick a real "style" and see who can make the best beer. Take the personal preference out of the comp and give the judges something to judge the beer with, a style! We can all try making whatever we want whenever we want, but a style gives a solid judging base for all entries to be judge in the same way and by the same criteria.

Yes, I wonder what the objective is though. There must be method in the madness. Perhaps they want to brew a new and unique beer that when available has no comparison. Something special and innovative like nothing else that's available. Could this be a new direction that craft brewing is taking? If so, it should be accommodated and judged somehow. No-one said to Sierra Nevada "you can't do that" (well maybe they probably did say that), in 1980, when they made the first American Pale Ale. How did that one take off like it did? I wonder if judges were involved, or if it was just the people judging it/buying it, in large quantities.

to me this seems like a great idea for a competition ... it keeps it constrained (base beer has to be american ipa) but open to lots of variation. Some people will brew bad beer, some will choose the wrong addition to the style, some will make great beer with good additions. I think the end result will be several beers that are all good but in very different ways, and that it will be a tough choice.

wish i could be there to judge it, it would be a lot of fun.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

What do you think is the best way to get tomato into a beer?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
