Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
Exciting news! We've just decided the beer style for next year's Ultimate Brew-off Challenge. It will be Rye IPA. A press release will go out with details in less than 48 hours, and I'll let you know when it's up on our website. Anyone have experience with this style of brew?

What a coincidence! I just got some rye in the latest Group Buy and was planning on making a Rye PA in the new year anyway.

Apparently we chose the right style. Sweet. This year, the deadline for submissions will likely be Feb. 27 and the awards party will be Thursday, March 22. Cheers!

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
Well this should be interesting!
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

To say the least! Sounds like a pretty wide open category this year - choice of hop styles, amount of rye, english or american IPA - all huge variables...

Sounds like a fun one. I've got a Rye Pale Ale on tap at home that I'm enjoying. Maybe I'll just amp it up a bit to IPA levels next time.

Very good. I just grabbed some sweet multi-colored rye malt on the last buy.

I'm going to try and make something for this, however the only "rye" I had was a picaroons, which I didn't enjoy..hmm, now that I look, I can't seem to find a rye on their website..

I have only had one or two that I can recall, and don't have the desire to brew a full batch, so I guess that leaves me out.

I know rye's are supposed to be spicy, but every time i think rye I think Rout Des Epices (Dieu De Ciel) and peppercorns.
I think us marsh-dwellers might do a group brew for this one. Hopefully with a little less pepper punch.

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
I like Rye IPA (and rye pale ale, and rye saison for that matter). I've brewed a few and have had some great ones from other brewers, so I'm pretty happy with this choice.

Sage advice right there. The rye should make the beer just spicy enough if done correctly. Looking forward to this one.mr x wrote:Don't use spices in your rye beer.

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
Now I'm officially stoked to try your future brews/brew-off submissions. Sad to say I've had many excellent IPAs, but not a Rye IPA. If anyone can recommend one to be found at a private store in Halifax, I'll seek it out. Cheers!

Garrison Brew off 2012
I see that the style has been sent out, Rye IPA for the 2012 Brew off.
I've never made one, so I guess I'll have some recipies to try.

I brewed a RyePA a few years ago. Not something that I could drink a keg of... Maybe next year.

Grinding some grain this week. Recipe shall be fairly close to WTF Pale Ale, with about 18% rye. Probably use 2 yeasts, and pick the best one.

I think us BNer's should keep a couple bottles aside for our own 'best of'.....
