Sober Island Brewing Competition

Post by oceanic_brew » Sat Sep 16, 2017 12:39 pm

Just saw on Facebook that Sober Island are doing a comp. The beer must include local foraged ingredient and at least 25% Hortons Ridge Malt.

The event is on November 26th same day as Big Spruce's. I messaged Rebecca to make sure she's aware of that. It says it ends at 5:00PM so both are doable, for anyone out of town could be good but two beer comps in one day is a bit much.

Just found an app called Useful Nova Scotia plants that might help spur the imagination.

It would definitely be tough to make it to both, keep in mind the judging for Sober Island will be earlier in the month, and the winner is asked to bring their beer to the launch party. Timing is unfortunate, though. Maybe need to rent a party bus to hit both?? :)

Hopefully no mis-identified mushrooms are used. Yikes!

Nowhere in the registration form is there anything about bringing beer to a launch party.

The event description implies it:
The winning beer will be available on tap, next to several others of ours including our first Foraged Series Release.
I wonder if that's just a hope on their part. Working with a potentially unknown ingredient I'd be more inclined to do a few small batches and submit what I thought was the best one. They ask for 6 bottles, so they may mean the "extra" bottles will be available for tasters at the awards gala (that's not quite "on tap" though). Might be worth an email or posting a question on the event page.

If you've got a registration form, does it say anything about what counts a "foraged" ingredient? Like, would hops I've planted and grown in my own yard count as a "foraged" (if unimaginative) ingredient? What about wild ones I happen to know of growing in the city?

Yeah that doesn't make any sense. How could it be available on tap if the winner only bottles and only brews 1 gallon batches?

If it was just hope on their part it's advertised as what's happening, not hope.

Anyway, it doesn't specifically define foraged. But if you planted something then you don't need to go foraging for it. Hahahaha

Anyone know the time for Big Spruce event on the 26th? I see the Sober Island on is from 1-5pm.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Kettle soured lingonberry saison. Not sure what happened...developed a weird plastic - almost canned spray paint aerosol aroma. Very disappointed.

Anybody headed down tomorrow?

I'm gonna drive down leaving from Dartmouth and coming back in time to get to the big Spruce comp if anyone wants a ride.
