When I was there in November, they were awaiting another one (or maybe two?) pilot systems. The batches made on the pilot systems end up on tap in the retail store for sale in growlers. They always have an "Ale" and "Lager" on tap (and in bottles), and then 5-6 more of the experimental batches made by the students.

Garrison’s qualifications may change next year so whether brewing students would be able to participate in the competition is debatable, but, Robertson says, she would like to participate once again and that she will if she gets the opportunity.
Maybe they know something we don't.

Sounds like it. At this point though, I think what's done is done. Would just be nice next year if they draw the line in the rules a bit more clearly.

It may very well be done, but I have no fear of throwing this information out and waiting for an answer. In the words of Steve Earle (adjust this quote for nationality):
"The most important thing to remember is, no matter what anybody tells you, that is it is never, ever unpatriotic or unAmerican to question any f---ing thing in a democracy."

Yup, totally agree on that as well. It would be nice to hear the straight details. Sketchiness like this around something that's supposed to promote craft beer, home brewing, and the home made/DYI attitude definitely isn't a good thing.

Just a wild-ass-guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if Garrison had no idea the winner was enrolled at NC or that beer was brewed there.

Makes sense - I don't recall there being a column for that on the entry form!

Hey everyone,

Just starting reading some of this thread and wanted to clear up some of the confusion.

No I did not brew this at the school, I have my own DIY homebrew kit that I've been brewing with since I've started. I would never use our pilot system for a competition like this, totally unfair and unjustified. In fact I'm still brewing stove top versus propane, which makes it interesting enough, hah.I have talked about doing some dry runs on the pilot system at the school next year, but that's for a recipe development course.

And I agree for next year, Garrison needs to stipulate the rules a lot more clearer then they have. To be honest, I never expected to take the win at all. I know there are a lot of you that have been into the beer brewing a hell of a lot longer than I have. But anywho, I haven't even begun to read through a good portion of this yet, but I just wanted to let you all know I did not make that beer on the commercial systems at the school. The school has more or less jumped on getting they're name out there right now through this whole event.

I'm sorry for those of you who may be upset, I by no means intended for that. I just love brewing beer, hah.

That clears it all up I do believe!

And btw - nice to see someone win from my hometown as well! Although technically I grew up in Fauxburg, my grandparents lived in Lunenburg so I spend a significant portion of my youth in town.

I got to try it and it was a damned fine beer. Please come back often - it would be great to hear about the NC program first hand. Plus, as mgc put it in another thread - this forum could benefit from some double X chromosome perspective

Thanks guys! I need to brew another batch soon, school has had me bogged down, so its on my To Do's. And yes, I'm going to start making a solid effort on being in on the forum. I've got tons of great resources up here and would love to put some information out there when ever I can. Gotta love those double X chromosomes! hah

Great to hear from you Kellye, and congrats on the win! I met up with Shane in Saint John, and he was a glowing cousin to hear and share about your win. And your story explains why there were only 2 bottles of the winning brew at the release. I was sad to have missed it (all gone before I shoved my way to the front of the line).
I look forward to hearing about the fun, trials and tribulations of NC, and your plans for the future.

Cheers,
Chris

good to hear from you, great job on the brew off, and :welcome: feel free to post the recipe :headbang: in fact we should probably have a thread with winning recipes or something like that.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
