Results arrived today!! First ever competition. 33 and 34 on my HIPA. It's interesting how different yet similar the judging is.

Definitely depends on your fellow competitors' entries. 40+ is almost always a medal, mid-30s could be a bronze.

I put a RYE IPA in category 23 and i'm interested in seeing what it got for a score! I wonder what the winning beer in this category received.

Josh, should that have been entered as a fruit beer? If so it would have scored higher.GasMD30 wrote:Ya, it is tasty! The judges said mine needed more cowbell... I mean pineapple.Keith wrote:Hawaiian IPA, they are tasty.

Yeah, if you have any left it might be worth entering it in the upcoming Members of Barleyment comp.

Re: 2014 National Capital Home Brew Competition
As I see it, it's an American IPA with pineapple aroma from the boil pineapple.... I guess I coulda (and shoulda) put it in 20a... Or do both!
Either way I should increase the pineapple. Any suggestions on hops varieties that might accentuate pineapple?

Re: 2014 National Capital Home Brew Competition
My results came back today. Interestingly enough my they all wrote very positive comments about my RYE beer and told me i should have put it into 6D! I didn't think it fit into the guidelines for 6D thats why i lumped it into 23. It was one of my favorite beers to drink so i think i will brew it again, tweak the hops and try it in 6D.

Re: 2014 National Capital Home Brew Competition
My results came back Friday, but it's been a busy week. My southern English brown (no place) got a 34 and a 36, with the comments that it could use a little more caramel/toffee character and less roast. It's a fair comment, but I like it the way it is so I probably won't change it next time around. My oatmeal stout got a 38, 40 and 41, with mostly positive comments, although they noted that it was slightly oxidized.

My IPA received 40, 40, and 39 and the only comment they made was that there was a slight hint of oxidation as well. Its probably true i did have a hard time bottling this one!

Re: 2014 National Capital Home Brew Competition
Thanks Jimmy, it was brewed with my custom brew bag
I did 60L of it and split it between two friends, we each took a carboy and used a different dry hop combo on each. Two of the carboys used california and one used ringwood yeast. The one i submitted i dryhopped in a different way, using citra and cascade but i soaked the pellets in a water bath at 140 degrees for thirty minutes. The other batch with california used the same hops but with the traditional method.
