This actually excites me quite a bit that Propeller is releasing a series of Lambic style beers. I think I'm going to stock up on a few of these.

HALIFAX, NS – Propeller Brewery has announced the upcoming launch of a new series of beers that have literally been years in the making.
The Propeller Lambic Style Series is a collection of beers inspired by the classic wild and sour ales of Belgium, and described as follows:
Propeller Lambic Style has been brewed in keeping with its origins using unmalted wheat and aged hops. We fermented this unique brew using yeast similar to that found indigenously in the Senne Valley of Belgium, southwest of Brussels. Aged in oak wine barrel, this brew displays tart, musty and complex flavours.
Four beers are planned to be released in the series, with the first being Propeller Framboise, a 4.2% sour beer brewed with whole raspberries, and bottle conditioned for several months to add “effervescent and refreshing carbonation.”
Propeller Framboise will be debuted on Saturday August 23rd at Bar Stillwell in Halifax, where it will be available by the bottle or glass while supplies last. Retail sales of 750 ml bottles will launch the following Monday August 25th at both Propeller stores.

We're pretty excited about this project. We've done our best to represent the style as closely as practicable and are quite pleased with the result of this first release. It's been a long time coming for us and we really hope folks enjoy what we have done here.

Looking forward to trying it Andrew. Are all 4 versions coming out this fall? I'm assuming one version will be the base lambic/gueuze correct? Can you tell us the other variations?

Sounds like a lot of care went into this batch, can't wait to try it.

Sounds like the Gottingen St. store sold out of it's supply in 10-15 mins... Haven't heard anything on the Dartmouth store.

All gone at both locations now. Same offer as I mentioned in the other thread - I got 3, so if anyone missed out I'm willing to part with my extra bottle.

They said at the store this morning that there's a raspberry, blackberry, cherry, and a "plain". Depending how they did it that could mean Gueuze or Unblended. If they had multiple batches all the same age it's technically not Gueuze (blend of old and young lambic).

Not unless they change how they sell them. Plan for now is Seasonal/Quarterly releases.

Thanks for the info about the variations Bobby. Certainly aware of the 1, 2 and 3 year old blend being a hallmark of the style. More referring to gueuze style, which tends to be highly carbonated, as opposed to unblended lambic, which is almost always bottled/served still. Always felt that distinction isn't properly addressed with the BJCP guidelines. All semantics anyway, since their version would technically be neither, as it wasn't spontaneously fermented, let alone in the proper region :spilly:

I see quite a few folks tried the Blackberry at Stillwell yesterday - what did you think? Since most Blackberry beers tend to be on the sweetish side I didn't have high expectations but I think it worked really well here. Almost seems like the Blackberry brought out more funk and made it seem closer to true Belgian versions than the Framboise.

As I was tasting it, I was trying to mentally compare it to the Framboise. I think the blackberry version was not as sweet, with a lingering bitterness and more barnyard funk than the previous version.

I really enjoyed the Framboise, but found the diacetyl too high in the blackberry version. In both cases, more fruit could have been used. I picked up my bottle today, hoping a couple years in the cellar lets it clean up a bit. Very happy they went traditional in style, instead of dumbing them down and really enjoying tasting the different versions.

I'm curious about the cork they used. It seems smaller than the typical belgian corks. Is it just a wine cork, and if so would there be any worries on how this beer will age?

yeah it was a differnt type of cork. didnt mushroom nearly as much

i enjoyed the blackberry, probably equally to the raspberry. i did not get nearly enough fruit character with either of them (which is not surprising - belgian ones have in the range of 300g/L of fruit which is crazy). still quite a tasty lambic in my opinion.

My glass was essentially dregs it turns out (it would be nice if they poured into a second vessel first with one pour, then individual glasses from there), so it was a little gross. Brenna's glass was from a fresh bottle and tasted better. I agree with what boogie said, and also bought a bottle with the hope that it'll improve. Also concerned a bit about the cork... I kind of thought I picked up a bit of acetic acid already, though it may have just been some weird black berry type flavours. I'm interested to see what the straight version is going to taste like (assuming that will be one of the four).

No sir. They'd made some announcements in April, but then cancelled them due to the beer. Not sure when it will be coming out!
