Best Case West Coast APA

Post by jtmwhyte » Sat Jan 17, 2015 3:44 pm

In a hurry to get a brew on I picked up one of these kits. Anyone have any insight into how it is with the 30 minute boil? I'm planning on doing full volume instead of topping up and maybe swapping in some fresh amarillo at the end. thought?

"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Pretty sure I've read on here HappyHopper say the best case kits are designed for 30 min boils. You will obviously get some more bitterness from 60 min boil but if your on a time crunch go for it. I like the idea of Amarillo at the end and why not some more for a dry hop as well.

I'm just gonna hammer the shit out of it with Amarillo

If you're doing a full volume boil Id say stick to 30 minutes or even 45 for an extra punch.. Remember more volume contributes to higher hop efficiency, that alone will up the bitterness without a longer boil. The Amarillo idea sounds great!

How did your kit turn out? I just picked a couple of "Best Case" kits up and one is the West Coast IPA.

Really good. It didn't save me a tonne of time, but it turned out good. I hit it with 6oz of flameout hops (Amarillo and Cascade) :rockin:

Awesome. Im slowly transitioning from the "Coopers" Extract can to all grain and thought the "best case" kit would be great to try as I make the transition. Just sprinkled the yeast on the St Paddys day Irish stout!

Yeah, I do all-grain 99% of the time, but needed something quick. Was a good decision.
