Old yeast

Post by Broob » Sat Jan 10, 2015 9:54 am

Found a mason jar with 1056 in the fridge that I saved from a large starter that I made about 5 months ago. Forgot it was there. Made another starter with itThursday night and as of now there seems to be no activity, definitely no Krausen. Time to dump it or wait longer? Suppose I could take a gravity reading. Good idea guys, thanks.

Was your current starter small, like 500 ml?

No 1.5 L. Just for reference, I think my storage technique is pretty good. 500 ml of the first starter, chilled then decanted. Then fill the mason jar with previously boiled (then cooled) water.

FWIW the yeast was dead and after 3 days the gravity didn't change. Smelled horrible when I dumped it.
