What is your water bill? Am I getting hosed?

Post by Maritimer » Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:01 pm

I posted this topic here for a few reasons, being pissed off near the top. Bare with me as i will get to the point.
We (My family and I) are moving back into the city. We have been living in Hatchet lake for 3 years but we miss the convenience of city life.

We saw an apartment on kijiji listed for $1000. after viewing and submitting our application we were approved with the following change, and I quote:

"Also, due to a very recent change in water utility, a private meter is being set up. The rent will now be 1050 a month which includes water, this will be monitored every 6 months and reimbursement paid if applicable. Jeff, let me know if that is correct? Please let us know if you have any questions."

Really??? WTF? the place was advertised 3 days ago at $1000

My question for you brewers is this: what is your water bill?
do you pay more that 50 dollars a month?
the "recent change" was 12.9% 50 bucks seems like a huge over correction in my opinion.
Should i tell these people to go F themselves? :x

Thanks.
Beer.

That seems like a lot. I don't have kids, but I'm a whole house and I brew a lot, and we pay like 30-40/month.

$600 extra a year for water seems a little high. I'm thinking this is their way of upping the rent while still being able to advertise it as $1000. If the apartment is worth $1050 then I wouldn't worry too much.

I might worry more about them changing the terms after you have applied and paid them a deposit. Also if they are going to install separate meters for each apartment in the building, wouldn't the payments be going to the utility and not the landlord? This city is filled with slumlords and the tenancy board isn't much help with disputes. I'd take a better landlord over a nicer apartment every time.

I'll have to check Shelley's rates, but $600 doesn't sound insane anymore to me.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Household of 5 we pay 75 a month, however we get 2 months "free" a year due to over paying the other months. So on average I'd say $60/month

We pay in or around $600 per year, family of three with a small garden and a kid who loves playing with the hose, but I guarantee Alex takes longer showers than your little one.

You mention "private water meter" - not sure on the regulations with respect to water, but for electricity there are some standards with respect to owners charging tenants for electricity.

Thanks for the input everyone, at least it sounds like the 50 dollars is reasonable. I still don't like how they upped the rent like that last minute, but that's renting in Halifax I guess.
