Well, I read the website, and I now have a much clearer picture of what heritage ale is.

From what the site says, it's beer brewed with water, malt, hops, and yeast...

Don't be so quick to bust their balls.
Hopefully it's good. 20bbl is serious.

I think I will wait for the Nash DIPA Heritage Ale Little Stunner.....then we will have a beer to compare these old NS Heritage Ales with.

I'm okay with this as long as it tastes good and they don't advocate for the extermination of differing varieties of beer-kind.

Speaking of fascism , ever notice that the Nslc keeps more of the good old fascist wines together...

I like the idea of not launching a brewery with Yet Another Red or Yet Another Blonde/Pale. Choosing styles to differentiate yourselves in the market is a good idea. The old style beers could be good, as could an entire family of under represented styles: lagers. Only one or two in year-round production in the province, so you could be the lager brewery. See Jack's Abbey in the US for proof of its success.

They are not committed to the heritage idea, but the intention was originally to research and brew historic beers and ancient recipes. That sounds like a plan to me, although as I was discussing with them last night, to a large extent this has happened in the North American craft beer movement which started when home brewing was legalized in the US in 1979, and Sierra Navada's production of the first APA in 1980. Many historic styles like porter, RIS, milds etc. have been revived by the craft movement and given a new life.
Also many historic brews are still in production ...Guinness, Pilsner Urquell, Lambics etc. etc. ...but history goes back further than that.
Does anyone have any thoughts around this theme? is it a useful direction to take?
I suppose it wouldn't have to be exclusive. You could have one or two feature historic beers, along with some APAs and things.
I see nothing wrong with brewing classic styles or even some long forgotten styles from ancient times. However, if you are looking at "real ale" or "cask conditioned ale" that may be a bit tougher sell in the current market due to the lack of experience with cask ales in a lot of bars and pubs in the area. Education is possible, and changes on the way pubs stock and hold casks is also possible but it all costs money.
I had contacted the Society earlier in the month and got a couple of short answers to questions on heritage ale and membership, but nothing really helpful in describing the difference between heritage ales and those being produced by some of the craft brewers already operating in the Maritime provinces, nor anything concrete on how to become a member.
This is the response I received when I asked the difference between the society's goals and those of the craft brewers operating in the Maritimes :
Thanks for your note Derek. I am away looking at brewing equipment on the west coast until next week so this is a short reply. Yes, it's craft ale to heritage recipes from England and Europe, real ale styles and some others.... but in sympathy to other craft beers here. We need more craft ales in the Maritimes. Membership involves learning to brew and make ales, the chemistry and being involved in the social side of the Society. The Society is also funding the microbrewery due to open summer 2015 in Port Williams on land we have bought.
Oh, also, members who are active brewers can invest in the brewery project after a time and will also receive a variety of ales regularly.
I never did receive a response on what was involved in becoming a member.

A bit worrysome to me that they're using membership fees/investment to fund the brewery without any clear direction, and it's set to open in under a year (short time, big plans!). If I were looking to be a member, I'd want a whole lot more concrete information. I'd also be wanting more than a quicky learn-to-brew, and a group of people I paid to hang out with...but maybe that's just me. The info may be available somewhere, but clearly isn't being well-distributed. But from Mark's post, knowing he's involved with these folks, wondering about what styles to do...it sounds like there is a lot more to be worked out.
With all that said, I also like the idea of this brewery producing something different than what other breweries are doing.

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing a few more (NS made) stouts and porters on the shelves of the NSLC.

You have me thirsty wanting some Jack Abbey's beers. So good.

This whole operation sounds sketch to me. Either someone swindling money from people on purpose, or with no clue doing it by accident. We'll see how it pans out... If I had money to invest, it would not go to these folks given the current lack of details.
