Beer Names

Post by GuingesRock » Thu Jul 31, 2014 6:32 am

I thought I’d start a thread for beer names so people can post a description of their beer for help with coming up with a name. Also, if anyone has, or knows of beers, with good names, that would be interesting …just general beer name stuff.

I’m stuck on a name for my raspberry American wheat I’m making. I was going to call it “Lola” for a bit, now I have “Blush - raspberry wheat". Not happy with that either. Fruit beers are feminine compared to a DIPA.

Greg Nash always seems to come up with really good names. Is there any method to this madness?

I usually reference the ingredients. ..like my Le Dorado is saison with all el dorado hops.

El Hefe' was a hefeweizen with el dorado hops.

sometimes we name them for events...like Miss Piggy Blonde, and "Gettin' Piggy Wit It" were for our pig roast.

Our Dos Amigo is named because my brew buddy and I came up with the recipe together...flavor was based off of a Mexican style lager.

I named my lager "Knuckle Head" cause I screwed up when I made it.

I'm working on a recipe for Caribbean-inspired beer (aka rum flavours) that I'm going to name "Staggers and Jags (c)" in reference to Stan Rogers' song Barrett's Privateers

A "welcome to the similac club" package just came in the mail for me (to my address from 5 years ago)...so my buddy suggested that instead of wasting it, that I make a simulated breast milk stout...I shall call it Muttermilch (german for breast milk)

Mark,

You could call your raspberry beer "Fresh Picked - Raspberry Wheat" or something along those lines. It plays up the fruit, is kinda catchy (I think anyways), has a decent ring to it.

Sens fan?

I don't tend to name them but number them instead like ipa# 12 so in. My beer journal I can go back and see what I like and what I would like to change.

A Sens fan is the absolute last thing I am (except a Habs fan). It's merely a coincidence that they could both euphemize Paul MacLean, lol

I just came back from Bulk Barn where I bought some Star Anise and the whole way home I was giggling at the thought of making "Chocolatey Anise Licorice Stick Porter" so much so that I'm making a 3G pilot batch next week... May have to rename the brewery "Backdoor Brewing"

Careful Trevor with that one. Backdoor has too many connotations, some you might not want to imply.

Thanks for the cute names Becky and Keely.

Keely, I got up to date with the local gossip this afternoon. Kirsten has been busy. Wish her luck :cheers2:

Also two new breweries in the works now apparently in Wolfville.

I've never bothered to name my beers, I just call them what they are, and use a numbering system for the caps. I'm lazy that way.

Like waiting to see what the baby looks like before you name it, sometimes you have to drink a beer to come up with a name. My new light coloured APA has been waiting for a name, it’s been called “that one” for a few days. I decided it can be called “Mellow Yellow”, it’s lemony and yellow goes with lemon, and the bitterness reminds me of lemon peel too. Maybe it’s me that’s mellow because I’m not sure if it is a good one, or maybe because I need to have a few more, or maybe it was my second glass of beer and the first one was the raspberry PSB, and I wished I’d had another of those instead. It needs a bit of hype I think. The name will help. It’s a heritage ale too you know. It's fresh so it hasn't cleared yet.

In my case, if I were to use the term "Backdoor" I would make it entirely obvious that it's a reference to anal sex. I've registered my home brewery on Untapped as Balls Deep Brewing.

That said, I probably wouldn't pick a name that had any sort of butt reference unless the beer tasted horrible.

when i started brewing that was half the fun naming the brewery, the beer, labeling 60 bottles, giving it to friends etc. now with the kegging system naming is the only thing i do maybe a sticky note on a growler if im taking it somewhere. naming still fun currently have on tap wobbly pop, skookum black ipa, woozle brown, pliny the toddler( not my original name) and not so silly yak GF ( based on Nobel grape recipe)

Sometimes I name them, sometimes I don't.

What the heck is a Heritage Ale anyways?
