Erlenmeyer flask as kettle and fermenter

I want to start doing 5L mini batches and wondering what people think of using the group buys 5L Erlenmeyer flask as a boil kettle and fermenter.
As a fermenter I know I shouldn't have any issues but little concerned as a boil kettle mainly due to hop absorption and not enough room for DMS to escape. Thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea. Don't think DMS will be an issue. Boil over might be unless using fermcap. Should chill nice and quick too.

It might be a little tight for 5L. You could also just use a large stock pot, BIAB on your stove, and ferment in the pot. Just like G-Rock does but on a smaller scale. You wouldn't have to worry about a broken flask either.

Yeah 5L is stretching it. I do have two 5L flasks so I could do an 8L batch and split it into both flasks.

We used to use erlenmeyers to make microbiology media in school. The agar syrup would typically be a lot thicker than wort but I still remember the boil overs. They happened -very quickly-. I wouldn't want to deal with hot break or hop additions in one!
