So I really want to get some more people interested in brewing. I'm contemplating brewing out front of my house in the drive way. However I have one question.

How does everyone lift the bag out of the pot during a BIAB session? I was thinking lifting it would get to be a bit of a pain in the arms. I then contemplated draining to buckets, then dumping it in when I'm ready to boil.

This will be my first single vessel all grain BIAB and really don't want to fuck it up. haha.

yea that's what I was thinking about doing is just draining it to a bucket, pulling the bag, then dumping the wort back in.

I also have some old wood, a sturdy (heavy as hell) ladder, and I can get a pullet and some rope fairly cheap. I may just rig up a basic pulley system.

No need to over-complicate, Keith! You should be able to just pull the bag, unless you have some monsterously insane grain bill... Plus your burner is fairly low, yes? That'll give you better leverage anyways. Kirsten pulls the bag here, and our burner is the Blichman with leg extenders, which puts the top of the pot at almost chest-height. Less leverage than if the pot was lower, but she can still do it no problem.

When she pulls the bag, she just pulls it high enough that we can slide a flat cooling rack (like for baking) under the bag and let it drip into the kettle. Once most of the dripping is done, we move this to on top of a bucket to collect more drippings. We add the drippings back into the brew kettle before or part way through the boil.

yea mine is lower but I'm going to be brewing on a stand of some sorts. I want to be able to open the valve and transfer to the primary. Plus I was thinking of letting the grain bag drip over the boiling pot.

I do something similar to GR. I pull out the bag and set it into a plastic bucket which has an upside-down collander (also my false bottom for the kettle) in it. I sparge in the bucket. Works great, and you don't have to hold up the bag for very long.

Sounds good. May need to give this a try.

I pull it and let drip for seconds and drop it in a pot or bucket to finish.

Keith....I do single vessel BIAB...I use to put the bag and put in a bucket then dump the excess wort into the kettle...I now have a large baking rack that sits on the pot...I twist the bag a couple of times to keep it from spilling over the sides of the pot. All runoff is done before the boil begins.

5G BIAB grain bill is no problem to pull from the pot. I use a large colander over the top of my keggle to rest the bag and let it drain.

Like everyone else, I lift it out manually. I hold it over the pot for a minute or so, then chuck it in a bucket for a bit till I am ready to dump it in the green bin. Don't have a colander or anything

awesome. From what i was reading online it was heavy. Apparently they must have little girl arms. lol. I think the colander route will be how I go.

I've done similar using a 6-foot a-frame ladder with a bar across the top plate hung over a bucket. Like most, I usually pull, hold and move to a colander over a bucket.....and my burner has a bit of height to it, (rebuild on the horizon)

Could do something similar with a 2x4 sawhorse and a counterweighted beam, or even easier two sawhorses and a beam across.

I always just lifted by hand, and placed in a stainless grill wok that sat on top of the pot.
