Hey guys, I'm gonna brew my first APA this weekend. I'm starting with the BCS recipe, but want to change the hop bill to Simcoe, Amarillo and Citra. Here's the recipe:

5.1 kg 2 row
240mg munich
227g wheat malt
mash 152

horizon 13% 0.66oz 60 min
cascade 6% 10 min 0.5 oz
centenial 9% 10 min 0.5 oz
cascade 6% 0 min 0.5 oz
centenial 9% 0 min 0.5 oz

wlp001 or wyeast 1056 or us05

OG1.056
FG 1.013
40 ibu

How much Simcoe would I need to subst for the Horizion?
How much Citra and Amaillo would I need to subst for the Centenial and Cascade? The flavouring and aroma hops look a little light to me...should I bump them up? Can't dry hop this one easily, as I'll be out of town while it's fermenting.

Thanks,

Neil

Heh, for APA and IPA I usually follow the rule - When in doubt, add more late hops! If you can't dry hop it might be worth adding more 0 min hops.

I can't see any negative side to this idea.

Looks tasty. I'd personally ramp up the 0-15 min hop additions to a level that you will grow hops on your chest.

Thanks guys.

So, would this hop bill work?
Simcoe 0.66 oz 60 min - enough for bittering?
Citra 10 min 1.0 oz
Amarillo 10 min 1.0 oz
Citra 0 min 1.0 oz
Amarillo 0 min 1.0 oz

I like the looks of the late additions. I don't know anything about the boil additions as I always do FWH. I might even double the FO additions, if you have enough hops.

I'm new to hop cals, amature at best. However I come up with 59.73 IBU's total. 30.95 of which are from the first addition. Looks balanced to me. If I recall reading some where you want to try to balance your bittering IBU's with your flavor and aroma. (Someone correct this if I'm wrong).

Actually looks like an amazingly tasty WC IPA :cheers2:
