conterflow or immersion chiller?

Post by Newfiebrew » Sat Mar 01, 2014 6:45 pm

Hey guys what would you recommend as a chiller for a newbie getting into all grain a counter-current or immersion chiller.
I was looking at this one:

http://www.nybrewsupply.com/beer-home-b ... iller.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or would a copper immersion chiller be better..maybe 50' by 1/2".

thanks again.

I'm really liking the immersion chiller with recirculating pump. Google the superchiller from more beer

I have an installed immersion chiller (50' x 3/8") and a whirlpool going as it cools.

If you don't want to run a pump then I'd say the counter current chiller would be the next best thing. Probably quite a few on here would say the counter flow chiller is the best way to go.

I'm brewing on the cheap...so 25' immersion chiller...i stir the wort with the coil every few minutes.

I'm guessing it takes 15-20 min to get from a boil to pitch temps.

After much research I'll be using this method this spring. I like how it drops the temp on the entire volume of wort at the same time. As an added bonus debris is drawn to the center of the pot, so if you use a side pickup this all gets left behind.

In the interest of full disclosure, I've never used a counter flow chiller.

I just use a simple immersion chiller and recirculate with a silicon hose and pump

I use a homemade 25' 1/2" copper CFC.

They both work well IMHO, its more a case of which youd rather use. I have a fixed system on a stand which was going to have a pump either way, so a CFC made sense to me.

That sounds very simple (always a good thing), and effective because of the stirring.

You forgot the most important thing...it's cheap :spilly:
I'm still very new to brewing, and have progressed from festa brews, quickly to partials, and quickly again to all grain.

Our equipment is basic gear...pots/keggle, cooler style mash tun, and copper IC. Now we use temp controlled fermentation chamber (when required).

We are getting better, but want to have quite a few more brews under our belts before we invest in any upgrades.

I've been looking online at local hardware stores, but can't find a 50' copper coil. Anyone have any recommendations on where I could pick one up? I've been pricing it out and I'll save in around 60$ building it myself.

Rona in Bayers Lake had them and they were the best price I could find in town. Now that the Bayers Lake location is gone, maybe RONA on Robie would have them.

We recently picked up 50' of 1/2" soft copper from Bird Stairs for just over $40. We looked all over the city and there doesn't seem to be a better deal.

Looking good according to the website. I'll call tomorrow to be sure. $54.99 for 50' roll of 3/8". Would go 1/2inch, but it's a lot more expensive.

I just called. Prices must of went up. 50' Coil 1/2" is $1.35 a foot. $67.50. Looks like Piercy's on Windmill is my best bet @ 54.99. Plus I'm heading in to Dartmouth to pay for my Windows, so will stop in and get the coil if they have it :)

Just picked up my tubing and fittings from Payzants. Just need to get some high temperature hose from Dave when he returns, and pick up a burner. Then I'm ready to brew outdoors! :cheers2:

Any recommendations on how to make a 90 degree bend in this? Kent didn't have a pipe bender, and Canadian tire only had 3/8 max size. Pipe is 1/2 inch.

The spring benders are pretty good for larger diameter bends. Proper benders are a must for tight diameter, unless you use solder or compression 90's.

Man I tried doing my solder fittings twice. Cleaned em immaculately, applied flux, heated well, applied solder, let it cool... Didn't hold physically let alone pressure. I'll try a third time but otherwise I might be looking for a solder wizard on here.

Cleaned with wire wool? probably not hot enough. Butane gets hotter than propane.

Thanks for the tip on Princess Auto, and also not to attempt it without the tools.

Liam that's why I'm bending mine and attaching the hose adapters with high temp silicone and a few hose clamps :)
