Type of tubing?
Hi guys i'm new here and to brewing beer and was wondering if there is any particular type of tubing required for transferring the wort from the mashtun to the boil pot? Is high temp needed? Vinyl or silicone? I guess the wort won't be any hotter than 170 deg or so.
Thanks
Jamie.
Thanks
Jamie.

If you are going to get tubing I'd recommend the high temp silicone. You'll never have to worry about what temp your liquid is and you'll be able to use it for anything.
Vinyl gets pretty flimsy at high temp and I wouldn't suggest it. It would probably do the job fine but if you brew for any length of time you'll eventually get silicone tubing anyway. In a way you're saving money!

thick walled silicon is best for boiling wort
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Great question! I've been using vinyl, but will definately make the switch to silicone.

Re: Type of tubing?
Once had a vinyl hose blow on me, not fun. I live in a condo and was trying an indoor brew for the first time. The vinyl tubing was on my immersion chiller. I typically fed water to the chiller through a 50' RV hose, with the return water coming through another 50' hose. In this case my faucet was about 5' from my pot so there was hosing coiled up all over the kitchen floor.
The brew went great, I threw in the chiller and turned on the faucet. Typically that exhaust vinyl tubing got really flexible but never gave me any problems. Well, this time I accidentally stepped on my return water hose (the hot stuff). I turned around just in time to see the vinyl swell up into a big ball and then explode near boiling water all over my kitchen.
I'm not going to tell you that I use silicone on my chiller, because I don't, but I do use silicone anywhere I can. I use these tubes from mash tun to kettle, kettle to fermentor, and hopefully soon to whirlpool my near boiling wort while chilling.
Note the ID is 1/2". These tubes work great with camlocks, which let you change connections very quickly. I think that there are other connection methods but I can't speak on them.

That's per foot. I recently bought a bunch. It is way more durable than braided vinyl and does not soften. It will kink under weight though.Tim Gregory wrote:How many feet does 2.79 get you Dave?
I had a piece that I accidentally pressurized with my keg washer to 20PSI and it blew up like a balloon, but did not break. The bubble in the tubing was around 6"! Seems really durable to me. not meant for pressure.
