Best Case beer kits
I was just looking at the latest newsletter from Water n' Wine...and it mentions that they will be carrying beer kits from bestcasebeer.ca. No real info on their website...but they are located in Dartmouth. Anyone know anymore details?

The address listed appears to be Noble Grape Burnside's address.

It is made and distributed from Noble Grape but being marketed separately as they will be sold in other brewing stores.

Mark I was also wondering about these. Saw them on the recent newsletter too. I see Truro Water n Wine is now carrying hops. Might be worth checking out in a pinch.

Re: Best Case beer kits
Am I correct in assuming that these will basically be a new version of the pre-packaged NB recipes? (Which have kept my keg happy on many evenings). Cheers.

If by NB you mean NG than yes! Most of them are or have been re formulated for better balance and flavor .. Basically the craft beer market has exploded so the kits have been rebranded to give them their own identity, hopefully we will be expanding into other markets soon to get more people brewing craft beer!

Re: Best Case beer kits
I believe one of the posters referred to NB as the Best Case beer. This likely was in reference to Northern Brewer's kits (USA) and if these are as good, we are in for some tasty treats. The reviews online were stellar! I took Jonathan's advice (Noble Grape Bayers) and picked up a couple of kits (Cascade IPA and Rorys Red) to ease my way back into becoming the "Heisenberg" of home brewing. I cooked up the Red this morning (March 23/14), following all instructions to a "T" for a baseline start. The wort settled out at 1044 - hard to read with my hydrometer because of the "cream". I hauled out my refractometer to read it. Taste test raw was sweet and malty, and the aroma is promising. This may be the corner I turn towards weaning me off my dependence on Festa and Brewhouse, especially with the recent price gouge/jump. I will likely keg this one and bottle the residuals and age them for a few months. Next free primary will see the Cascade IPA with Jonathan's hop swap, as I told him I loved the Festa Pale with a hit of citra as a warm weather drinker. Looking forward to my results!

I've had both of those, however went with a 60 min boil on them. Both tasty beers. Another favorite was the Honey Brown, honestly was my first keg, and it lasted less than a week as well everyone had to test the handles lol.

Re: Best Case beer kits
Good day all,
I just started drinking my Northern Light kit. Most of it is kegged and about 12 bottles. I am just not sure what happened here. I sterilized the keg to what I think was the best you can do. The beer taste a little "sour"?? not sure if it is the hop or else I taste there.
Sterilized the bottles also but I decided to go fast and filled them with a pan and a funnel
. I really don't get it, it does taste so much better( beats Festabrew!)
I did not prime the Keg as I forced carbonated it and there is about 1/2tsp of corn sugar per bottles roughly.
Is it expected to see a "big" difference between the keg and the bottles?
Marc

I noticed it had a different flavor when I brewed it as well. Not sure what it was but it kept for about 4 months. Bottles and Kegs tasted the same.

I don't think it's sour, but it had a twang from what I remember. The kit I bought didn't come with a list of ingredients, you able to post the recipe? We may be able to "discover" the mystery twang.

Re: Best Case beer kits
250 g dextrin malt
200 g Canadian 2 row malt
2.6 kg light liquid unhopped malt extract
700 g high malt glucose
Boiling hop 20 g Northern Brew Hops
finishing 22 g Cascade Hops
Nottingham dried ale yeast.
bottling sugar, I used corn sugar I bought at NG, probably the exact same thing that comes with the kit. The twang is not the same in the bottles. Bottles are smoothers. I am not experienced enough to know if the priming in the bottle and the forced carb in the keg would make such a difference. The difference is not huge but the GF will drink the bottles but not the keg. Must remember not to bottle too much next time....

Re: Best Case beer kits
I'm willing to bet it is the Northern Brewer hops.
A strong fragrant hop with a rich rough-hewn flavor and aroma, ideal for steam-style beers and ales. Northern Brewer has a unique mint-like evergreen flavor

Re: Best Case beer kits
Well.. I cooked both Best Case batches...although not on my new propane rig... they were all right...Rorys Red crystal clear and the Cascade a little hazy...both bottled instead of kegged. Neither matched what I expected - bettering Festa. And putting time and more money into equipment seemed futile. I then cooked a Brewers Best Imperial Blonde Ale and have to say it blew all comers away! Anything I've ever done...however I do have a Festa ESB Wort I fermented and bottled and it's also tasting good. EverwooDave has done up a couple requests for me...Now if I can approximate the Brewhouse and Festa (which I now know is possible after the BB) I will be a happy camper (drinker). Extract cooking has proven itself to be an inconsistent beast so far...

I never had luck with the Extract boils. I never did a full wort boil and think that was my down fall. It made going to all grain an easy decision.
