CO2 keg hookup - infection source?

I've often wondered if the quick connect of the CO2 hookup has a possibility of introducing infection into the keg. I spray the post with starsan, but do nothing with the coupler. Is this a source of concern.
We bought my father in law a 5lb CO2 tank for fathers day, so I can take him a keg now and again, and I noticed when we visited at Halloween, that he has the ball lock connect on the floor when it's not in use, beside the dog's bed in the porch, and it's lying there, covered in mud and being trompled on, and probably licked also, by the dog....should I worry? should I talk to him...AGAIN!
what do people do about this. I used to dip the couplers in Starsan, but the ball bearings got clogged with dried Starsan and stopped functioning, so you couldn't get them on and off.
Thanks
