Morning everyone,
I am in the market for a wort chiller and am looking for opinions. I am still brewing 5 gallon batches and unsure if I will ever go to 10. That being said I like to build as much as possible so was thinking of building my own.
If i build would 20' of 3/8 copper be enough to get a quick chill?
Is building really more cost effective?
Can anyone recommend a canadian website if I decide to purchase?
If there is anything Ive forgot to ask I throw myself on the mercy of the group to educate me!

It is easy to build one. Go to HD or Lowes and buy 25 feet of 3/8" or 1/2" of soft copper pipe. If you don't have a keg, wrap it around a stock pot, solder on garden hose connections and that is it. Go to You Tube and search on making an immersion chiller. Lots of videos on how to build one. Yes, the price of copper is high but still cheaper to make your own.

I bought one of those, the copper prices here in SJ are pretty high, so I would have saved $20 or so by doing it myself, which I thought was not worth it, my hours are worth more than that

Ive been toying with whirlpooling while I chill off my IC and i find Im getting really good results. Ive added a S shaped piece of copper onto my pump outline with a barb and essentially it increases the speed that water passes over the coils. kinda like JZs verion but my is cheaper and likely not as nice.

I have watched the youbtube videos on how to make my own and as GM mentioned the price of copper is pretty high (30 bucks for 20' of 3/8 here in Moncton)

I bought the same one and for the same reasons... it works well and I can only submerge half of it due to my keggle dip tube being right in the middle

edit: I would add that I can chill a 5 gal batch in just over 10 mins with water from a garden hose

OBK had 10 plate chillers for fairly decent price.

I'm in Moncton also and got everything I needed to make my wort chiller at Home Hardware on Elmwood. They will cut whatever length of copper you need from a big roll. I got 25' of 3/8", four 90 degrees elbows, hose and hose fittings for about $60 if I remember correctly. I had extra pieces of copper at home to solder the 90* elbows and a soldering kit though, so I didn't have to buy that stuff. Good luck!

We just used the OBK one on Sunday and with a slow gravity feed we ended up with 16C in the bucket! It's also currently onsale..
