Did anyone get any Golden Promise from either of the last 2 grain orders? If so, have you noticed an efficiency hit when using it.

When using 2Row, I'm still in the high 70's, low 80's for my efficiency, but the 2 batches I've done with the GP, my efficiency dropped close to 10% They weren't unusually large grain bills either. I'm not a stickler for efficiency numbers, but if I base my recipe on 78%, I'm not really making the beer I was hoping for if I only hit 70%.

I haven't used mine yet, but I'll keep that in mind. let me look up the data sheet that came from NCM. I'll email it to you.

Maybe Nash or JohnnyMac will see something there.

I just remembered - one of those GP was a big beer, an Old Ale which I also partigyled. The biggest grain bill my 48qt mash tun has ever seen in fact (~20 # IIRC). Obviously my efficiency numbers were low on that one, but nothing unexpectedly low. So I think that puts me back at user error - but I still wouldn't mind seeing that data sheet.

Golden Promise - Diastic Power 65
- Extract Coarse dry basis 79.4

CMC 2Row Maritime - Diastic Power 111.
- Extract Coarse dry 82.1

I assume you want a high extract number - I'll have to edit BeerSmith for the Golden Promise - huge difference in the DP. I based my recipe on Maris Otter, whose default DP in BeerSmith is 120. I think I found where my problem is.

Really, WTF? I see both data sheets, although the numbers are too fucking small and I can't read the motherfreaking titles arghhhhhh, I give up!!!

I've used my GP on two beers now, one I'm drinking as I write this, and haven't noticed any real difference in my efficiency.

The difference in DP from your 2 row malts to the Golden Promise should only become a factor if you're accustomed to using a fairly short mash schedule, something like 10-15 minutes. Diastatic power refers to the malts enzymatic levels and their ability to convert longer chain starches into simplier sugars that are easily fermented. So, with a malt like Golden Promise with a lower DP than well modified 2 row, you are able to squeeze out the same amount of fermentables, it just takes a longer time in the mash to get the conversion complete.

So, unless you're trying to break the mash land speed record, it's likely something else that's causing the change in your efficiency, lauter time, mash temp.? I do find the flavor of the golden promise malt beers to be a little sweeter that standard 2 row, which leads be to believe that there are still residual long chain starches kicking around contributing to the sweeter malt profile.

OK, now I'm back to being confused - I mashed for a little over an hour and don't recall any other significant changes. Oh well, its tastes like its gonna be a good session beer.

I'm with you brother, just drink it.

The whole mash schedule, temperature and technique thing is something you can go on forever about.
