Turning the mash tun upside down...

I just stumbled across this on youtube

Its a German all in one vessel electric brewing system. Its a really neat design, they pretty much turned the mash tun upside down. The false bottom is a false top, they pump water/sweet wort into the bottom of a grain basket and it overflows the top back into the outer boil kettle where it is heated and pumped back through. Its an interesting take on RIMS.
Now I'm wondering if this could work with pumps like the ones from March that alot of brewers use and how to make one without breaking the bank.

Lord Garak hasn't been around in a while unfortunately. Beer didn't work for him. I think you can find those systems at Morebeer.com

Canadian Homebrew Supplies also sells them. They're super pricey units though. You could build a pretty kick ass brewery for the amount they want.

Ahh, yes, the Braumeister.
Once I get my basement system up and running with a bag I am planning on trying something similar with a "mash tube" as they call it, instead of a bag. The big difference with these guys is that they recirculate their mash water from the bottom up. What I'd like to try is a stainless mash cylinder with only holes in the bottom, just a removable mash tun insert for my BK. My BK is bottom drain so this could end up working well. Either that or my grain bed will compact too much during recirculation.
Maybe that's why these guys recirculate the other way.

So if you had a turkey fryer basket lined with fine steel mesh....
From a BIAB point of view, couldn't you sparge or vorlauf or whatever though that?

It's very touchy... tonight when I'm home I'll forward you the big HBT thread about someone trying all sorts of mesh sizes for this and not having much luck with mesh.
