Can you transplat already grown hops?

Post by TimG » Tue Jun 25, 2013 1:58 pm

Got a person out here that has a bunch of hops growing up by their garage. They have no idea what type (I can figure it out later). Giving them away.. they are already well grown (up near the peak of their garage). Can I transplat this and actually get hops from them this year? Or should I just cut em up and take the rhizomes and wait till next year?

Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but if it were me I'd try to transplant them and see what I get. Nothing to lose really.

You may not get cones as they'll need to get used to the new soil, but I don't see any harm. My brother in law and I just transplanted all of his hops a few weeks ago and they took right off again. Mind you, it was just to the other side of his yard…

Sounds like it is worth a shot. Any tips on the transplant? I'd like to make some suggestions for her to 'cut them out' so that the likely hood of me pulling off the transplant will work out.

Thanks

I've done it with decent results, way better than starting from rhizomes

Transmitted from the hop-phone.

We took them out of small beds, and cut the sod back about three feet in every direction and pretty much manually dug out all of the root structure that we could. Ended up trimming the root balls a bit, but we didn't want to risk losing a season with them.

I'd move with as much rhizome as you can get. Be prepared to dig, a lot.

Heh.. the person giving them away is doing the digging (she wants to plant something there asap.. not sure what the rush is). So I'll take what I can get, throw em in the ground and see what happens.

The plants will live, but I doubt you will get any cones seeing as we are past the solstice.

You can even cut some of the belowground rhizomes off of the crown and plant them too.

Ya, I'm not too worried about getting cones. Hopefully since the plant is 'older' I'll get a decent crop next year. Interested to see which type they are..

Definitely won't get any cones this year, ha.. they were a bit 'mangled' upon removal. Did a real quick job of chucking them in the ground see if they take.

As long as the roots grab hold this year you should have some nice healthy plants next year.
