Brother in law is about to brew this extract kit from Nobal Grape.

The instructions say to boil NB hops for 30 min. There is only the Northern Brewer hops and Cascade finishing hops in the kit.

I think he should boil the northern brewer hops for 60min. Or is the extract in that kit already have bittering complete somehow?

hmmmmm...I think NG sells both hopped and unhopped extracts. Might have to call them about that.

I'm pretty sure most NG extra kits are only 30min boils so that would be the bittering hop.

I've done a few of them before moving to AG and they all called for a 30min boil with Bittering at 30min, Flavour at 8min and aroma at 1min.

Hello fellas our hop additions take into account less boiling time therefor we use more hops to hit the targets. Although we carry hoped malt extract we do not include this in any extract recipie, all hop flavour comes right from the hops we give you!

Not always - it depends on the amount and type of bitterness that you are looking for. You can get bitterness from a 30 minute addition, it just won't be as pronounced or lingering as a 60. For this style you don't really want it to be overly bitter anyway. A good steam-style beer should have a clean finish and some lingering hop flavour. Achor Steam is sort of the benchmark for the style and it's done to about 35 IBUs with little lingering bitterness. I do a few beers with 30 minute bittering additions and they tend to accentuate the flavour, while providing moderate bittering. Also keep in mind as well that Northern Brewers are strong-tasting hops and can be really overpowering.

Here's a link for a chart that shows what kind of bittering, flavour and aroma profiles you can expect by using hops at various times in a boil. Notice that the flavour and bitterness percentages intersect at about 50% at the 30-minute mark. Hope this helps and good luck!!
