Brew in a Bottle is Back!

I see that the brew in a bottle kits have hit the CO-OP stores up here in Cape Breton. Probably down in Halifax too. They've got some pretty nice advertising and packaging this time.

Anyone tried them? I am thinking of making all of them and hosting a Brew in a Bottle Taste Party. Can't imagine they are very good, but on the other hand they could just be FestaBrew in a bottle, which would be OK.

Interesting. I remember when co-op was selling wine kits in small boxes with no name labels. I don't even think they said red or white, lol.

Someone on a job site mentioned it was somewhere in HRM.

One thing I will note that was a bad idea (presumably they did this so you could check for clarity to see if it was time to drink): they are in clear bottles. When I saw them at the CO-OP they were sitting prominently on display (as individual bottles) in the glaring supermarket lights. Yum. Skunked before they're even brewed!

They need hops to be skunked, lol. On a side note, beer brewed with hop extract is not susceptible to skunking IIRC.

We buy these all the time and use them to make starters. Just have to sanitize the erlenmeyer, dump in the bottle, pitch some liquid yeast and turn on the stir plate.
I've never tried using the yeast that comes with them though. It scares me.

There is a box on their site that you can fill in your postal code and it will tell you where it is available locally. Looks like mostly convenience stores but they are in Halifax!

I don't know if it was this brand or not, but they have the same thing at Wine Kitz in Halifax.

Maritime Beer and Wine always has them and they are the easiest starter you'll ever do.

What are the prices like locally? Is it ~ the same as buying DME to make a starter?

They're about $5 at the CO-OP. DME would be cheaper, but no boiling, etc., with these. I can see why they'd make good starters.

Using this as a starter is a neat tip. Will have to give it a try.

I made them as research for a story idea.. Results will be in TAPS, but let's say they surprised me in one way and not in others...

They sell these by the checkout at the little supermarket in Kingswood, Hammonds Plains. I've always been curious...

Water N Wine had them. I saw someone walk in buy a dozen of them in one go. I was thinking to myself that he should probably just buy a kit of something

I've seen them at Holts Convenience on prospect road. I think they were 6-7 bucks.

Craig, the one that you gave me turned out to be quite a bit better than I expected it to be.
Btw, what an awesome idea to use them for a starter!
