Am I being paranoid, or does this electric kettle build seem like a really REALLY bad idea.

Aside from the fact that copper and brass fittings are being used, the thin-walled fermenting bucket used as boil kettle scares the hell out of me. Even if you were using plastic, these buckets seem pretty light weight.

Very frightening.

Good way to get that chemically tasting goodness into your beer!! Whats that crap called, BPA's or something?

Don't get me wrong, I'd gladly take a 15 dollar brew kettle. But carcinogenic beer doesn't seem worth it.

hahaha that's awesome! Crazy and stupid for using the fermentation bucket for a BK but props to the guy for his imagination! I wonder how long it would take those two kettle coils to heat 6g of water to a boil?

He claims 15 to 20 minutes, but he's running on 220V. Probably makes a difference.

Friend of mine in Iceland built something similar out of 60 L herring barrel and 3 elements from electric tea kettles.




He says it works pretty well, haven't tried the beer from it. I'll keep you guys posted if he gets cancer or starts to develop boobs from the chemicals from the plastic :p

The Herring barrel seems slightly safer - just because I think there's less chance of a catastrophic meltdown - but I wonder how many brews he had to make before everything stopped tasting of fish. Or if he's reached that point yet!

Paul, there's probably no BPAs in any of these - but BPAs are a bit of a red herring anyway: all plastics leach nasty things into water, more so when you heat them up. BPAs are just a bit worse than the average plastic used for drinking water.

LMFAO at the disclaimer about the legality of actual brewing, without any clear disclaimer about the danger of wiring dismantled electric kettles into a thin-walled plastic bucket. In fact, he says "in short, its not a super safe procedure but with a little common sense it is safe enough." Safe enough for what?

Actually selling something like this is mind-boggling.

[Edit] Did a little more research. The catastrophic meltdown in the plastic pail should actually not be an issue. Polypropylene has a 275F temperature limit. I think we have all used things that could harm us one way or another but this think is way out there.
