just wondering what you guys use to connect a blow off tube to your carboy. Is there a tube size that will fit snugly inside or around the top of the carboy?

I use 3/8" racking cane/hose stuck in the carboy nipple.

That was my first plan, thought It might be too small.

This is what I've used on my better bottle - it's just the cap off the big 19L water jugs, with a piece of hose from home depot that fits snug.

I've been warned, but so far haven't had an issue...

I nabbed the plastic cap off a water bottle from work, I'd rather leave my siphon tube clean.

I use the stems off a couple of broken 3-piece airlocks with some ½" silicon tubing jammed on them and then jam the stem in the bung.

I don't have extra head room so I use #10 stoppers with holes, and right angle pvc barbs and tubing. I think they're 3/8"... I would like to go bigger but I've never had a clog.

I use one of these (I am not sure if this is exactly the right size or not--the hose barb fits snuggly on the Brew Hardware silicon hose that was making the rounds: <
http://www.amazon.com/Brass-Inlet-Nippl ... B005O1A1UO>). I screw the threaded end into a standard soft rubber bung. It takes a bit of doing, but really sticks. And then just stick the silicon hose on (no clamp nec.). One of the highlights is the whole set up can be boiled.

I use a #6.5 or universal stopper with 3/8" tubing - like X, I've been warned, but haven't had a problem with clogs - everything seems to flow through it.

Since I always ferment in a glass carboy, I use a 1 1/4 inch OD hose which fits snuggly right into the top.
Can handle as much crud as is thrown at it.
An example:

I used to use 1-1/4 braided PVC as a blow off, but I used to have to heat it a bit to get it to go in the glass carboy. Sometimes it would be pretty sticky to get it out. Now I use 1/2" OD tubing I get from my LHBS. I drilled out a regular stopper so that it would fit in the hole. I have used regular pvc tubing that I used with my racking cane and never had an issue as well.

I use Fermcap and a rubber stopper with a standard vinyl hose and don't get a lot of foam. When it does climb out, I haven't had any clogging yet. I do like the bigger hose idea though.

Yeah, I could use a larger diameter tube. I guess my stopper wasn't in tight enough and I came home to this. Nottingham yeast, low 60's fermentation temperature. Good positive presure, not worried about infection.

Good thing it came out early. When I first started brewing I had one build up carbonation first before popping emptying the entire carboy of porter on the ceiling, walls and floor. Not good. I don't think I would have the same problem now that I am more careful with making sure all hops are settled and screened out prior to the wort entering my fermenter, but I still use a 1-1/4" blow off tube that fits into the whole neck of the carboy like above posters just in case.

Im confused, did your blowoff get jammed?
How does everyone clean their tubes after you take them off and put on the airlock? I find it's a real PITA to get the tube clean of crud.

I jam one end into my laundry sink tap and run warm water through it, then put it in a bucket of oxyclean to soak, rinse it again, and then into the bucket of starsan.

+1 on the OxyClean soak, then a quick water rinse and then starsan before use.

Yes, a clump of whole hop leaf plugged it.
