freezer temps

Post by Stusbrews » Wed Feb 13, 2013 8:34 am

Ive been waiting patiently for my S23 to kick off, and after 36 hrs, ZIP....
Investigating this morn, discovered theres a huge diff in temps between top/middle/bottom of the freezer!
The probe was taped to the side of a plastic bucket, and sitting at 9.1C(48 for metrically challenged). Removed it and put in the bottom of the freezer, and its now at 7.5(45f) !
No wonder theres zip....and being a lager, theyre all at the bottom too.

Hey Stu, that sounds like it could be normal to me. When the probe was taped to the side of the bucket, it was measuring the temp of the bucket. When you removed it, it started to measure the air temp in your freezer, which will fluctuate a lot more.

Did you use 1 or 2 packs of s23? When I used s23 I used 2 packs and fermented at 12c.
Bottled: ESB, Old Peculiar, Blonde Lager, Grolsch clone
On Tap: BCS Dry Stout, Festabrew Cervesa
Next: Grolsch clone 2.0, Irish ale

Sometime when mine lager yeast has a tough time starting out I let it sit at room temp till I see the krausen start to form (usually 8-12 hrs) and then place it in the freezer for the remainder of the ferment.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I only did a 1/2 batch of this one(10L with s05, 10 w/s23) so only used a single pack of 23...
Im thinking the probe simply wasnt down the bucket far enuf, with only 10L in it.
Im not really concerned about it, as I dont think Ill like it anyhow. Lol.
This was my attempt to make as tasteless a beer as possible....for my Bud loving friends...
When asked what they liked so much about bud, I got 2 answers the same...it has no taste! The gaunltet was thrown....3 kg 2 row, 1 kg rice, 1/2 oz mt hood. Figured it was a good way to see the diff between ale/lager as well. And I also learned rice is nice..on a plate, but it sucks in a mash. Missed my OG by 4 points.
