Haskap Berries

The past few years I've been growing different fruit to support the fermenation hobby. Limited success so far..deer have been a problem.
I came across a new berry that has recieved some fanfare last little while. Haskap. Color is vibrant red-purple, and flavour is super-intense combo of Blueberry, Raspberry and Rhubarb. I've got 10 first-year plants growing, hopefully they'll produce something.
Halifax seed started carrying them last year, I'm sure they'll be back this spring. Berries are not available yet for sale because of scarcity. I think Haspak would be a great candidate for a fruit beer.

Search around the site, some of us have bought them from a local farm.

Cool! I had no idea you guys were growing these. I think they have great potential for our region. We'll have to compare results this spring.

We just planted 1000 plants here on the valley last fall. It's such an exciting plant and we're pretty excited about the possibilities for the berry.

I'm looking forward to a crop of some sort this year, albeit small.

Here's a recent article on Lahave Forrests (Haskap Growers) in Canadian Farm Magazine. I'm on the Lahave email list, out of interest.

We are growers in Minnesota and we over the past 3 years have planted 5,000 plants. Thus far a mixture of the Canadian varieties of Borealis, Tundra, Honeybee and Berry Smart Blue. This year I will also be introducing the Aurora variety also.
This year we hope to have 300-400 pounds for harvest. The birds are a problem and netting is needed. Deer have not been a big problem.
We plan to market our berries for wine making as well as jams and jellies and fresh eating for local. Been in touch with a maker in Montana who have stated it to be the best wine they have ever made.
We also import and sell the Canadian varieties into the United States for anyone of interest on this side of the border.

Here's a Haskap winemaking link. Look interesting. Maybe one day i'll get my hands on enough to try a small batch.
