Are there any advantages or disadvantages of either?

If it's for a BK and you use an IC to cool your wort I would go with a 2". I personally can't think of any reason to go with a 6" when mounted horizontally. I guess it depends on what you need it for. I installed one on the cover of my MLT and I had to go with a 12" probe.

I'd say go with a 2" probe. I have 2" probes installed in my 15 gal BK and my 9 gal HLT and never wished I had 6" probes installed........especially in my smaller 9 gal pot.

i havea 6 inch probe but it only sticks in about 2.5-3" into my OBK pot because i have to have a female adapter to the pot from my temp probe.
