Is there any disadvantage to a larger than required boil kettle? Would using a 19g kettle for 5g batches be a bad thing? I'm thinking about ditching 3 vessel system for a MIAB (mash in a bag - in a cooler), and 19g boil kettle. I wan't the ability to do 10g batches comfortably, but currently only do 5g. School me

It would likely depend on the diameter of the pot I'm guessing.

With larger diameter pot and less wort would likely lead to higher evaporation rate. Other than that I cant think of anything bad.

I wonder if it would be much different than a keggle. Apparently the pot is 18" diameter.

Worse case scenario do 8 gal batches and bottle a few.

Your boil off likely wont be that much higher, I say go for it.

That's crazy talk. I can barely bottle a 6 pack when it's already kegged

If I'm going larger than a 5g batch, it's going to be a 2 kegger.

One thing I just thought about was cooling time. I use an immersion chiller so less of the wort would be exposed to the chiller coils..A plate chiller would fix this, though I'm not sure if I'd want to go that route or not.

yeah plate chiller would work. i have one of them. however, i would rather have a counter flow immersion chiller. worse case is u just need to move the immersion chiller around the pot more actively.

That's exactly what I have run into. I recently picked up a 15G BK and have been using it. I'm still doing 5 gal batches and my immersion chiller is only half immersed in the 15 gal BK and it takes significantly longer to chill the wort. I've actually gone back to a 9 gal pot for my BK until I start doing 10 gal batches. Like you mentioned though, a plate chiller will fix that. I might get one soon because I much rather use my 15 gal pot.
