Re: kombucha
I love the stuff, but its not everyone's cup of tea...
Ok that was a weak pun, but I do think its good stuff. I would love to make it myself, I bet you could get all sorts of funky flavors if you had control over the ingredients/fermentation.

Re: kombucha
I've not made any or tried it, but have been meaning to give it a shot. Some woman on Kijiji has a culture and will trade for homebrew

Re: kombucha
My girlfriend is in the process of growing her first mother.
It's almost strong enough to be transferred into a big jug of tea to make a batch.
I can definitely hook you guys up with some culture to grow once this one has stabilized. I can keep those interested in the loop if you wish.

Re: kombucha
Deal - I'll start up a thread once it's big enough to part with.
We started it from the bottoms of a bottle of raw kombucha we got somewhere (honestly cant remember) so it took a while to get going. It's picking up the pace very quickly now that it's had some time to think.
Couple/few weeks and I can probably hook you up.

Re: kombucha
I started to grow a scoby over the weekend...purchased a bottle of raw komcucha from Sobeys and started from that. It was my first time trying kombucha but I enjoyed it!

Cool. Save me from googling, how do go about growing one from the dregs?

Re: kombucha
I realllly don't know much about it...but..
I basically took about 1 cup of the kombucha (which also contained a small scoby), and pitched that into a mixture of 1 cup of black tea and 2 tbsp of sugar. It's in a mason jar with a dish cloth over the top, held on with a rubber band.
That's pretty much it. It seems to be working and it seems to make sense based on beer brewing techniques.

Re: kombucha
Awesome. Going to see if Amherst Sobeys also carries Kombucha. Somehow I doubt it and I'm not too sure the cafe here in Sackville will want to share their scoby.

It was in the "Natural Food" section, refrigerated with the almond/soy/coconut milks.dean2k wrote:Awesome. Going to see if Amherst Sobeys also carries Kombucha. Somehow I doubt it and I'm not too sure the cafe here in Sackville will want to share their scoby.

Found some.. But it's labeled as "multi-green" with algae.Jimmy wrote:It was in the "Natural Food" section, refrigerated with the almond/soy/coconut milks.dean2k wrote:Awesome. Re: kombucha
Cool. I have one almost 2 weeks old but it looks extra gross because of bits of algae, which I don't want to get confused with mold. But ask it might cost me is a gallon of tea so no biggie.
I have another one on the go from a bottle of the ginger kombucha that'd less than a week old, but coming along beautifully

Re: kombucha
Lesson learned. I have successfully grown 2 SCOBYs from bottles and followed directions to a tee to brew up two 1 gallon batches. So now I have approximately 1.5 gallons too much of the stuff
Sure the kombucha will keep if refrigerated, but finding a suitable glass storage container(s) with plastic lids is rather a pain. The next batch will be significantly dialed back.

Re: kombucha
I haven't done anything with mine. I grew the SCOBY and it's been sitting there ever since
