I'm looking at getting a new propane burner, rather than just using my parents'. I've looked around the big box stores, and the best deal I could find was $50 for a 70k BTU burner (metric units forsaken as converting would be a pain in the butt). The American amazon (.com) has a bayou burner at 210k BTU or something, for $80, but they won't ship to canada. so I'm looking for advice on what I should do. is 70k enough to boil up to 14 us gallons (55 litres or so) in a reasonable amount of time? if not, is there anywhere in Canada to get a reasonably priced burner with enough power to do it?

I'm not sure how the pricing compares to other vendors you were looking at, but the pricing was great on the burners I purchased. All taxes, duties, etc are paid upfront so there are no unexpected charges when your item arrives..

I bought mine at Canadian Tire on sale for about $75, but I think that it is $100 regular price. It's primary use is supposed to be for making deep-fried turkeys, but it has served me well as my main burner. Here are the pros and cons:

1) It has a built-in "safety timer" that can be disabled easily enough but if you don't do that, it will shut off automatically and won't start unless the timer is set.

2) It's also pretty sensitive to the wind, so you need to find a sheltered place to use it.

3) The safety valve is pretty annoying, too. The flame on mine doesn't catch well anymore, so I have to keep it open by tying it down with a skate lace.

The pros:

1) Not sure what the actual BTU number is, but mine gives a pretty powerful boil. I actually had to start being more aware of having a proper, more gradual flame-out because the temperature of the wort was so freakin' high when I went to cool it down.

2) It comes with a huge 26-litre pot and a strainer basket. I use the pot to boil water for beer. The basket is great for corn and lobster.
