Slant Experiment

Just thought someone would find this interesting. I was making some blank slants a few weeks ago and I thought of a cool experiment to try. I sanitized 5 vials with just starsan and filled them with my medium which was boiled for 15 min and capped them. I was really thinking that the vials would be a green mess by now (over three weeks later), but they are all pristine. So obvious signs of infection. So this got me thinking. Whats the point of a pressure cooker when it comes to cultivating yeast when it seems starsan gets the job done? Are we underestimating the effectiveness of starsan, or did I just get lucky? Comments?
PS. I haven't decided wether or not to use these slants yet.

Given the surface area to volume ratio of the vials there's probably enough starsan residue to keep anything from growing, including yeast. Your next experiment should be to see if you can get a viable yeast sample out of a starsanitized vial.

I never thought of that, but your probably right. As I wasn't planning on using the slants, I didn't get all the starsan foam out of the vials. Some of it even setup along with the medium and is still in there. Im going to be inoculating more slants in the next few days with 1056 and 1187 so i will do the starsaned one's also, just to see what happens. I'll update when I know more.

Inoculated the vials with 1056 tonight. So we should have some answers in a few days.

Well some good news. The yeast seems to be growing happily in the starsanitized vials. I'm a little surprised really. Anyways i think ill let it go for a few more days and make sure no crazy fuzzies start to grow, then if all is well i'll make a starter and see how the yeast performs.
