Bypassing the Timer

For those of you who have bought or considering buying a turkey fryer as a brew pot, one annoying thing will be the 12 minute timer. The one I purchased was the 36 quart from CT. At first I just jammed the timer with cardboard. Got bored one day and done some investigating. Please note: Do so at own risk. :)

Popped off the button and opened up the little box. Here's what ya see in original configuration:

I disconnected the right-hand wire from timing unit, then with some assistance from my trusty jumper, I connected it to the soldered on connection on left-hand side of timing unit.:

This done the trick. Timer wound down and flame kept going. Also, the safety thermocouple that shuts of the propane in event of flame failure still functions.

So, with a bit of soldering, I made the change permanent. Here it is in final form.:

Just thought I'd share. If you plan on using the burner for it's actual use, ie. frying turkeys, I would just stick with the cardboard jamming trick. ;)

Yeah, I did that to mine, too. It was a quick fix. That timer annoyed me.

Like was mentioned on another forum, you could also insert a toggle switch between it and jumper it out so that you could use the devise as was intended
or switch to bypass the timer.

Yeah, the switch idea was neat. I never really thought of that. Of course, I have no intentions of using it for anything besides brewing.

Thanks for the tutorials! Someday I'll get around to doing this, but it's handy to not even have to think about it. [Insert comment about how engineers are supposed to be able to figure this stuff out anyway here, Kyle]

You're an industrial engineer. I expect you would reconfigure the timer to let the stove boil for the optimum time rather than 30 minutes or indefinitely.

I sense some tension there guys. Did something happen last weekend that you need to talk about? Please share your feelings with the group. :P
