I scored enough ice to do a iceberg brew with tonight. A iceberg grounded in Ferryland and pieces were breaking off it
and making it onto the beach in Ferryland. My wife and son went with me to get the ice and took some pictures along with a couple of short videos
so I will post them when I down load them.

Now, what should I make with it............ I am leaning toward an APA, but I have a little time to decide as I won't be brewing until Sunday.
I have to wait until the ice melts anyway, and as anyone who has had iceberg ice knows.. it don't melt fast.

Can't do that at too many brewhouses.

Melting good now, I have 1 full 5 gallon water jug filled. This is what I started with.

All that and only 5 gallons of water. Crazy.

True glacial ice should be ~90% the density of water. So there must be a lot of irregular shapes in those pots to melt down to 5gal, or Tony do you mean you only have 5 gallons melted so far?

Pure ice is about 90% as dense as water. Glacial ice contains lots of tiny air pockets that can further decrease its overall density. When it melts in water it fizzes so it makes great ice cubes for drinks.

I thought pure ice was a bit higher then 90 (a quick check in a first year text puts it at 92%). My understanding is the air pockets only slightly reduce its density, but I guess it depends on the source/age. Sorry to hijack this thread, but is it considered glacial ice after a density of 85% or so when it stops being firn?

Yes, I meant only 5 so far. I got another 5 this morning and still have the large SS pot full and a little left in the small SS pot.
There were a lot of irregular shaped pieces of ice though, and from previous experience I knew I had enough to do a full brew with
so I gave up trying to cram more in there. I should have enough left over to do a smaller brew with later.

And also due to the irregular shaped pieces it behaves like an iceberg and tips over from time to time when melting.

This will be my third brew using iceberg ice for the entire beer. They all came out great and were a great conversation beer as well.
The first one was about 4 or 5 years ago IIRC.

A titanic of a beer would be somewhat proper, brew up a big giant beer with it!

Titanic it will have to be then... but I`m still doing an APA with it.

I might do a lower volume higher gravity beer out of the remaining water though.

You should do a parti-gyle beer with the second beer being the APA. That way the APA can be the Titanic and the big one can be the Iceberg (10% above water)

I think you should go with a global warming theme.
