Mash hopping?

Post by GCR » Tue Oct 18, 2022 7:04 pm

Doing a 6 gallon batch of IPA or DIPA tomorrow using Thiol Libre yeast, and I've read that mash hopping works well with that yeast (the yeast sure smelled nice when I put my starter on last night).

Anyone have any experience mash hopping? I'm planning on using whole (dried) hop flowers for it, but I'm not sure how much to use, whether I should grind them up at all, what the impact will be on the kettle space, etc..

Escarpment labs has some Information on thier website. Cascade is a popular mash hop because it's cheap and readily available. I have used 5 oz in both thiol libre batches that I have done. Not sure if it really works because I had massive amounts of hops like Citra, Galaxy, Idaho 7 and Mosaic. Hope that helps.
Kegged - Cold IPA, NEIPA, Fieldberry Wheat, Dark Abbey Ale, Apple Pear Cider, American Lager, American Stout, Belgian Wit

Thanks. I plan to use my mystery hops (quite possibly and/ot centennial anyway), along with some cascade pellets.

I first wort hop fairly regularly. I would recommend grinding your hops to help get the lupilin oils full potential. Good luck.

Here's a tiktok video I made of my experience lol.

I used an immersion blender (with some wort) this time and it worked much better than the magic bullet I tried last time!

That Thiol Libre is a total beast... already going gangbusters...

I learned about grinding on my third full cone brew. Immersion blender worked like a charm this time!
