Cleaning and Sanitation

Post by Peterpasha » Tue Feb 16, 2021 2:09 pm

What does everyone like for general purpose cleaning of their equipment? I've been using either PBW or OxyClean for washing, but both have their issues with foam and rinsing. I've always used StarSan for sanitizing, but that has a foam issue too. I just got some SaniClean from 5 Star in the mail today, but that doesn't seem like it will serve my purpose either as it has an air-dry requirement. Ideally, I would like a no rinse, no dry, no foam sanitizer that I can use to sanitize kegs and go straight to kegging without having to wait. I suppose I'm really reaching for the stars if it would do a great job of cleaning post brew, too?

in a keg the amount of foam is negligible.

I'm ok with oxy and a "good" rince.

In a keg yes, it's not the keg foam that I have a problem with. It's the immense amount produced by my keg washer! Suds for days!

Nothing wrong with starsan foam unless you're using a keg washer, in which case some one step / aseptox type of peracetic acid based sanitiser works good. That's actually a non foaming cleaner and sanitiser that may suit you. I'd still use oxy / pbw for tough cleaning.

I use store brand oxyclean and starsan for cleaning/sanitising. Cleaning is just a overnight soak, no keg washer or agitation. Fill the keg with hot water, add a scoop of cleaner and come back in the morning. Sparkling clean every time. Same procedure with sanitising but I only fill the keg maybe 1/4 full and then shake all the sani around to get full coverage
On tap: Hopped Mead, ESB, Schwazbier
Coming up: Altbier
Fermenting: Maibock
Planned: NEIPA, NZ Pils, Oyster Stout

Have you tried Iodophor? May fit your requirements.

Couple of good options, both available from OBK. Thanks for the replies! :spilly:
