Tilt hydrometer question

Anyone using one? I'm thinking of getting one. I usually ferment in a corny keg in a small fridge. It's good for preventing oxidation/infection and controlling temperature but it'd be nice to know what's going in there. My concern is getting a reading through the keg and fridge.

Anyone doing anything similar? Any issues?

I ferment in corny kegs as well, and have been using one for about a year. The stainless really limits the range, but I always get a reading by putting my phone on top of the keg. Any further, and I get nothing. In a plastic fermenter, I get readings two floors up as long as I'm not on the opposite corner of the house. No issues really. Heavy krausen, I've had to give the keg a quick 15 degree tilt for a second to get a proper reading again, and it was fine after. That was on 2 batches out of ~ 16. Other than the price I've got nothing negative to say about it.

Yeah the price is an issue but I've probably spent more total on glass ones that ended up smashed.

I figured the steel would be an issue based on what I've read. Could always find an old phone or tablet and just keep it nearby I guess.

I love mine, have had it for 2+ years and use it in a stainless fermenter. I have a dedicated raspberry pi running Tilt Pi next to the fermenter so I've never noticed a range issue.

Yeah as mentioned in stainless the range is crap, but you can still get a signal up close. They are a little pricey IMO but they work. They also replaced mine no questions asked when I had battery life issues.
