yeast reuse overflow

Post by BrewMachine » Tue Mar 31, 2020 5:50 pm

Has anyone ever had your stored yeast do this? It's a first for me. This was collected from my finished primary that was fully attenuated. . . our so I thought. It looked fine yesterday. Only one of the two looked like this when I checked today but when I opened the normal looking one the yeast came to life and foamed out of the jar. These were in the fridge for about 3 weeks now and has settled as expected. It smells normal so I'm not thinking it's necessarily an infection. Image

That is how I feel about it, if it smells fine, it is fine.

I'm going to dump it anyway because I didn't want to reseal it in case it would become a bottle bomb. I just wish I knew why it happened so I can avoid it in the future.

Those look pretty dark. Did you rinse the yeast with distilled water, allow it to settle, and then decant a couple of times? I've had jar tops buckle in my fridge a few times when I haven't rinsed the yeast enough.

I hadn't yet rinsed it. I was about to do it when I found this problem. I guess I waited too long.
