Priming Sugar

Post by CorneliusAlphonse » Wed Jan 11, 2012 2:20 pm

Where can I buy priming sugar? Bottling my first batch since i started kegging a year ago, and don't know where I could find some dextrose besides Noble Grape.

for that matter, do I even need to prime with dextrose, or could I use a different sugar?
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

You can buy dextrose at any homebrew store and at some super markets.

I would recommend dextrose but you can also use malt extract (may take longer to carbonate) or honey. I don't recommend table sugar.

I've used belgian sugar, dextrose, honey, jaggery, and plain white sugar. Fears of table sugar are unfounded IMHO - look at the the % of the grain bill that you will use for priming. It's insignificant.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Thanks for saying that. I always thought that the people who insisted they could tell I primed my bottles with table sugar just knew I primed with table sugar.
Currently on tap: Nothing!
In keg: Still nothing.
In Primary: Doggone American Rye Pale Ale

I have premeasured bags from Brewhouse kits. How many do you need?

I stopped using dextrose and started using table sugar awhile back, and I've never noticed a difference.

consensus suggests: table sugar will be fine! thanks guys. this means I can bottle now, instead of searching for dextrose, and procrastinating until the weekend.

Go to Bulk Barn on Wednesdays and bring your student card. It's as good as the Brewnosers discount at N.G. They've also got exotic ones like demerarra.

I also have been using both dex. and table sugar. Only thing i would say is use less table sugar than dex.
eg: my bulk prime 23l.
dex: 1 cup
table: 2/3 cup
1cup table sugar would be a little much imho
sorry not in grams but I have been doing it so long by the cup.
Drinking: Red Hook clone

Yeah, but I decided this weekend's batch needs to all be bottled, because sometimes (like for the guys at Prime), I need bottles, and these days I never have any.

indeed - as long as it tastes good, i'll be giving a few to them. I usually try to brew my batches a bit big and fill a half dozen bottles extra when i keg. doesn't always work too well.

One more thing. I have noticed that corn sugar produces a frothier effect which I like. May be just me but my 2 cents.
