Bakeapples, cloudberries, whatever...

Post by mr x » Sun Nov 27, 2011 8:43 am

I need some. Forgot about this project, but was reminded last night watching the food network. The idea is a bakeapple lambic. Cantillon beat me to it, but fuck them, i'm doing it anyway - if I can find some. Soooooo, where are they?

Well I have a gallon of them in my freezer, but I'm guessing you would need more than that, and they are not cheap. I sell them for
$40 a gallon when do sell them, and that's cheaper than the going rate.
Having said that, the gallon I have isn't for sale, although I could spare you 2 Lbs worth if I could get them to you ( they are frozen ).
You could try here https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid= ... 965&v=wall" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and I'm not sure how many or what type of preserves this has http://www.shopdownhome.com/item.php?id=621" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .
But if you want 2 pounds, talk to chalmers about any next trip this way and I'll get them to him.

I think I'll probably need more than 2 lbs. Thinking about 5 lbs for a 5 gallon batch. Thanks for the links, I'll keep looking.

Surprisingly, Sobeys has bakeapple jams and sauces, usually in a special display in the produce/bakery end of the store rather than on the shelf with other jams.

Well good for you. Did they cost you an arm and a leg?
Curious.. I usually sell them for $40 a gallon ( 6 pounds in a gallon ) and that's cheap, even around these parts.

I got them for $8/lb, which was at cost from where I got them. Around 8lbs in the bag, and I am hoping they make a tasty lambic.

Update time. A few pics from the basement. I wish I had my good camera and tripod for these, but you get the point. Space Oddity Cloudberry Lambic.

If you can bring some over here when they're in season let me know.

trying to figure out how to do just that- I'm not sure how long they'd stay good when fresh, so freezing may be involved. nor how exactly they would go on a plane. I'm not sure. suggestions?

Freezing would be advantageous for brewing. Checking them with an ice pack might be sufficient. I can reimburse you if it comes together.

RobD had mine brought over frozen. Keep in mind that they aren't cheap, about the price of scallops.

Liam: If you want to buy them, Belbin's Grocery in St John's sells 'em frozen. A friend brought a big bag of frozen berries over on a plane and they just double (or triple) bagged them and had no issues.

Well they ripen here on the island much sooner.... like about in a weeks time. All that is providing there are any to pick.
Usually they start to be ripe around the middle of July to the end of July. The last years in memory had them dropped by
the beginning of August.
They do ripen much later in Labrador.

We had frost at the wrong time this year... when the berry flowers were out, and the dry weather we had didn't help much.
Not sure if there is going to be much of a crop this year. I was talking to my father and also to a guy up the southern shore
and both agree the berries will be scarce this year.

I go on holidays in another week and will be picking them if there are any to pick. I'll let you know if there are any around.
Liam, I guess because of where you will be working, you'll be talking to guys close to where the berries are, so you may be able to
pick up some or be told where to pick them. Good luck.

Freezing by all means is the way to go, unless you can them.
