Gold leaf tap handles

I'm pretty much sick of the crappy tap handle brands I have, so I am thinking about hitting them with some gold leaf. I bought a bunch for Lauren on eBay (where it's surprisingly cheap), but I have no idea how to use it. Do you put down glue or varnish and it sticks to it, or what? Does it need a top coat?

The only time I've seen it used, they laid it on the object, brushed it out and it stuck by electro static forces - TV doesn't lie does it?

I've never done it myself, but I've seen it done in an auto body shop before. They brought a pin striper in to do it, and if I remember correctly, he used a pin striping brush to lay out his glue/adhesive, laid the sheet of leaf on top, pressed it down with another tool, and then brushed away the excess. This was all done before the clear coat was shot on the car, so the clear coat would definitely have been laid down over top.

Now that of course was for metal, not sure how it would be done for other materials.

according to the very brief research I just did on the internet... you need some sort of glue/shellac.

Welllll, I decided to go with instinct, and used a shellac on the handle and then put the leaf to it. Not too much fun, so I'm handing this one off to Lauren. It will be damn shiny in the sun though.
