Re: The barrel project
Definitely pass on them for beer but those barrels make wicked smoking wood. I want one but have no way to chunk it up into small pieces. Maybe if a few of us go in on a couple if there's someone that can cut them up we could work something out? They have to be cut with a skill saw, band saw or table sawKeggermeister wrote:I say we pass on the old as ass barrels.

Re: The barrel project
I can certainly cut them up for you guys.
If you decide to go that route, be sure to fire me an e-mail (it's the only way to be sure I get the message).

Re: The barrel project
Update - Spoke to Bob at Glenora yesterday, he's still unsure on what they have for wet barrels available. He's heading to the distillery over the weekend and will let me know on Monday what they have.
Incidently, after I had talked to Bob earlier in the week, one of the local micro-breweries had called the distillery and wanted to buy any/all the wet barrels they have now and upcoming. Although I have a pretty good guess on who that is, Bob has commited to giving us first crack at whats available.
Maybe we should have started this thread by invitation........

Re: The barrel project
Ok Homebrew Brothers,
Update - Spoke to Bob yesterday and they don't have any 'wet' barrels on hand for us or for anybody else at this time. They do have old ones, emptied some time ago and stored outside since, but not recommended for our purposes.
The next filling run is in April, so he has us down for a few at that time. He did give me te contact info for their source in Kentucky if we wanted to buy direct. Not sure on the cost and would imagine that the freight would be killer.
Let me know what you think. Maybe time to think saison aged in wine barrel?

I'll do that. I'll have to confirm that those are still available.

Re: The barrel project
**UPDATE**
Ok Fellas, after a bit of fooling around, success with the folks at Glenora as they are now holding a freshly decommissioned barrel for us;
Emptied 30 days ago, 180 litres, same measurements as earlier in this post, $100 plus tax.
I'm in Cape Breton for a couple of days for work and am planning on picking it up on my way back home. I'm still assuming that interest on filling this bad boy won't be an issue based on the past activity here but I'll feel better once I have it on the truck......

Re: The barrel project
Most definitely still interested. I'd love to do something funky and can definitely provide a bunch of bugs for it, but I'm good with whatever style people want to do.

Chalmers, JT and I can knock out 120 liters in a session if that helps anything, but we want in for sure
Great Job Johnny

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: The barrel project
I would be interested in the 5gal. I was just trying to figure out how to ship my wort down for this. I can probably come out and help you brew and bring grain/hops, depending on when it is.GAM wrote:I'm in. 5gal would do me I can make 10 but I would need to store it (anyone want 5gal?).

Re: The barrel project
I think we'll probably go through this list from the start and see how many peeps we need. Also, if you want in, make sure you can do a high gravity brew, 25-27 Plato.....
