Double brew day today. And I held off for an hour so I wouldn't freak out the neighbors! Appears I get a downpour every time I venture outside. Oh well. It's only water!canuck wrote:Derek, you're definitely getting an early start!!

Nice, what are you brewing today? I brewed a RIS yesterday, and since the weather is going to be shitty all weekend I may brew again today or tomorrow. Was thinking about brewing the Atomic Smashbomb clone.LeafMan66_67 wrote:Double brew day today. And I held off for an hour so I wouldn't freak out the neighbors! Re: Random brewing pics
Shane,
I doing kind of a mysrery mild this morning, some leftover grain from a milling incident I had a while back. Weight and proportion should make a nice mild, and I'm using up a bunch of American hops I had in the freezer - so no real style, but a 3.5% hoppy mild.
Later will be an IPA I like to keep on hand and tomorrow will likely be Jeffs Bees Knees Pale Ale.

I've heard that the flip top bottles may be an issue...the gaskets slipping and gas escaping.glassgiant wrote:Jacinthebox:
Would pasteurization work with flip top bottles, or would they have to be capped?
How many bottles would you guess you'll need to open before you find the carbon level is right?
I'll bottle in beer bottles, cap them and let the carb up for 3 days at room temps...I guess the guys that have done this are having them fully carb'd in 3 days.
I plan to place them in my cooler, adding 180-190 degrees water for 10 min.
It's all finished up now...SG 1.067, FG 1.002. I'll let ir sit for a few more days, them bottle...If all goes well, the will be taking a hot bath Thursday night, and I'll be sampling them Friday night at Stan-Fest.

Re: Random brewing pics
I hope you'll keep us updated. Losing 3 bottles is not so bad. I was picturing a dozen! I'd love to do a hard lemonade, but I've got a white and RIS fermenting right now, that I don't have bottles for. The summer would be nearly over by the time it was ready. Maybe next summer.
Bottled: Silly Yak gluten free, Mexican Cerveza, Dave's Russian Imperial Stout
Fermenting: Dave's Belgian Wit
Next Up: A lager, I think

It take less than two weeks to bang this out, and 20 min to brew...grab some bottles from the recycle depotglassgiant wrote:I hope you'll keep us updated. Losing 3 bottles is not so bad. Re: Random brewing pics
I made it last summer as well, and it was a little odd at first drinking a purple beer. Not the manliest looking beer. lol I much prefer using real blueberries over extract, such a much more natural taste to me. I upped the amount of blueberries this time around from 5 pounds last year to 6 pounds this year.
This is last year's batch.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Bottling a test mild that uses abbey malt. Messed up my boil and got a little too mild at 3% so mixed results it seems.

Re: Random brewing pics
2nd batch is bottled, just need to carbon for 3 days, and then a hot water bath. I used 8 cups of sugar to back sweeten it this time. Tastes really good, even tho it's flat.glassgiant wrote:I hope you'll keep us updated. Losing 3 bottles is not so bad. I was picturing a dozen! I got my son a magnifying glass at Dollarama last weekend. I've absconded with it....I do let him borrow it from time to time though.
